I first came into bloom during the winter of 1886 when Emmaline and I were quite alone in the house.
Following my widowhood, I had come to stay in my brother’s house with his two boys and their governess, Miss Emmaline Driscoll. Carleton swore I was a boon to his wife, but I always felt like an unnecessary addition. The boys weren’t little lads anymore, and their governess was more than up to the business of corralling them. Miss Emmaline Driscoll was an imposing figure. She was easily a good four inches taller than me, with coal black hair, forbidding brows, and deep brown eyes. I soon learned her intimidating appearance masked a quick wit. Her company became valuable to me, for the only other female in the household was my sister-in-law.
Our comfortable days were coming to an end. Soon we would lose the buffer of Miss Driscoll, for the boys had reached an age which signified the end of their days in the school room. After the Christmas holiday, they were being sent off to school. Miss Driscoll would leave for a new position. I couldn’t stomach the idea of remaining in the house with only Carleton and his wife and had secretly begun plotting my escape by way of investigating travel arrangements. I longed for the sunny shores of Spain, Italy, or Greece, some place where I could revel in the exotic. The wretched December weather only heightened this desire. I schemed and pinched pennies from my pin money. I was determined that Carleton should not deny me this pleasure. He must disperse a set amount in accordance with the trust. He might withhold the discretionary amounts, but he could not deny my annual allowance, and I meant to make good my escape.
