When we were toddlers we could not wait for our next birthday. We were not just 4 years old. We were 4 ¾. Don’t kid yourself. Those 9 months make a huge difference to a toddler.

When we were freshmen in high school, we could not wait to turn 15. Who cared if we had to suffer the embarrassment of having our parents in the front seat with us? We were old enough to drive.

After we got our license we looked forward to our 18th birthday. Which of us fully understood all the responsibilities that being an adult requires.

If we had known in our teens as much as we know now, we would have found a way to stop the aging process. We would have enjoyed being 18 longer. Every night, when I have to pee at 2:00 A.M, I reflect on the good old days when I had the bladder of an 18 year old and could sleep through the night.

We go many years without having to look at a birthday with the same anticipation we had when we were younger. Just because there is a long time between important birthdays, does not mean that we do not have any more milestones to pass.

Those of us who are in our 50s and early 60s look forward turning 65. The difference is that instead of a sense of anticipation, many of us dread retirement.

Like our 18th birthday, our lives will change overnight. The change may not be as drastic as our change from being a minor to being an adult. Never-the-less, we will have to adjust to new systems.
