ABOUT BUFF POINDEXTER

INTRODUCTION

Clark Kent, literature’s longest standing nerd, dotes on Lois Lane. But Lois swoons over Superman’s heroics, confidence, pecs, and biceps. Only after Clark reveals that he is Superman does Lois accept his proposal of marriage (see the December 1996 special Superman: The Wedding Album). Comic books often play on the nerd stereotype of meek and hopeless physical specimens who secretly desire to be musclemen. Body builders Charles Atlas and Joe Weider successfully used nerd fitness envy to sell home gym products. Their ads in comic books emphasized the inadequacies of nerds to shame them into buying their wares. Fitness for Nerds is different. Instead of using shame to motivate, it taps your inner nerd strengths to get you into shape.

In theory, being fit is very simple. You don’t need to be raised on Krypton or swap genes with an arachnid. Instead, just eat well and get regular exercise. Nevertheless, fitness evades most people. Why? The biggest impediment for fitness is motivation.

A spreadsheet?

You don’t need much to get fit. You don’t need to be coordinated. You don’t need a gym membership. You don’t have to join a team. You don’t need to take supplements. You don’t need to be competitive. You don’t need a lot of spare time. You don’t need to go on a diet. You don’t need a long book. However, you do need to know how to use a spreadsheet. Fitness for Nerds is about using a spreadsheet to motivate you to get in shape.
