What We've Lost

You say we've got to have it, no matter what the cost

but I don't know what we're looking for

and you can't remember what we've lost.

In our bitter pasts we shroud each other, like a winter's frost.

Can mere love really soothe those scars

or do we need to have it at any cost?

Life is forever tested by raging tempests, swept around and tossed.

You’ll find me in the swirling eye of that storm

while you try to remember what we've lost.

Now you say that you've been cheated, lied to, double-crossed

so you look for the key to an unlocked door

that you say we need no matter what the cost.

Now I never see you anymore; you've vanished like a ghost.

A phantom I look for, you're floating out the back door.

Why won’t you please just tell me what we've lost?

And now whenever we’re together, our swords are always crossed

like one of us must be the unquestioned conqueror.

And you say we'll never have it, no matter what the cost

because now neither of us even cares what we might have lost.
