To the Reader. I began to write essays about my family, hometown, and upbringing eleven years ago with the idea of publishing a collection of nonfiction essays, a neat tidy anthology. After Simon and Schuster turned down my tome, saying I should first send a novel, I became a bit discouraged. For me, the first piece of work to get out into the world was the collection of nonfiction essays. There is a need in me to follow a particular order, to cleanse the palate or engage it or whatever it is one does with a palate. I believe all artists have a theme in their work, even if they do not choose to explore or admit this. I would say for me, there are several themes. In this short collection, I would say the main theme is how to reconcile my love of people and need for loneliness or something else.
As the reader, I will let you be the judge.
