Introduction

Congratulations! Your proposal made it through to the short list. You delivered a well prepared and solid oral presentation to the client. After waiting for several days in suspension the client has now formally notified you of their decision to award you the work contract. This is by far one of the most exciting and celebrated moments in consulting.

Oddly enough, it is not uncommon for consultants to prepare a winning proposal, land the work contract and then fail to meet the client’s expectations regarding the quality of the deliverables. This may be caused by a lack of understanding of the client’s expectations, poor communication between the client and the consultant, or outright failure to manage the consulting process by the consultant.

This book provides a systematic approach to implementing consulting projects. The book highlights and discusses the various steps that are meant to guide consultants to successfully implement and manage consulting projects. It also provides details on how to approach, perform and complete some of the tasks involved in implementing consulting projects.

First Things First: Signing the Work Contract

In the excitement of winning a contract you may be eager or tempted to commence work right away before you even sign the contract. Even if you trust the client and have done work for them before, discuss and sign the contract first; that is the professional way of doing business. Never begin work before you sign the contract! Clients will not resent you for insisting on a contract. Just remember that, should you commence work before signing the contract and run into problems later, you will have limited or no options for litigation.
