Shannon and Ally had never met a Monster.

Shannon said, “I do NOT want to meet a Monster!”

Ally said, “I do NOT want to meet a Monster!”

But the Monster said, “I WANT TO MEET SHANNON AND ALLY!”

One day, Shannon and Ally were walking in the sand. They saw a BIG MONSTER digging in the sand. It was a SAND MONSTER!

“Oh, NO!” cried Shannon.

“Oh, NO, NO!” cried Ally.

But the Monster kept digging and digging in the sand. It did not look up. It did not see Shannon and Ally. It was making a nest. It wanted to lay eggs and make more Monsters.

MORE MONSTERS! Oh NO!

Then Daddy came to see the Monster. He told Shannon and Ally this was a friendly Monster.

“This is a very nice Monster,” he said. “It will not bite you …. unless you come too close!”

Shannon said, “I WON’T come too close!”

Ally said, “I WON’T come too close!”

But they wanted to come just a little bit closer. So they went one more baby step closer to the Monster. The Monster did not move.

Then they went two steps closer to the Monster. The Monster still did not move.

Then they went three steps closer to the Monster. And the Monster moved its head!

The Monster looked at Shannon and Ally.

Its eyes blinked at them. It blinked once at Shannon and once at Ally. Then its big back feet dug a little deeper in the sand.

“Will it bite me?” asked Shannon.

“Will it bite ME?” asked Ally.

But Daddy said, “Only if you come too close.”

So Shannon and Ally backed away from the Monster. They did not want to be bitten by the Monster. Daddy laughed and said it was just a snapping turtle! The turtle got up and walked away. It was scared of them!

Shannon and Ally walked around the pond looking for more turtles. Suddenly, something moved in the pond. There was a head sticking out of the water! Was this another monster? Would it try to bite them too?

“What is this, Daddy?” asked Shannon.

“What IS this, Daddy?” asked Ally.

Daddy said, “That is a painted turtle.”

“Will it bite me?” asked Shannon.

“Will it bite ME?” asked Ally.

“Not even if you come too close,” said Daddy. “This turtle won’t bite at all.”

But Shannon and Ally wanted to get closer. They walked up to the pond and looked at the turtle. Suddenly, it dove under the water and swam away.

“Where did it go? asked Shannon.

“Where did it GO?” asked Ally.

Daddy said, “It went for a swim under the water.”

And they all laughed. The Monster in the sand was just a turtle. The monster in the pond was another kind of turtle. So Shannon and Ally walked away very happy. They did not get bitten by a Monster. They did not get bitten by a turtle. They saw two turtles and that was fun.

Then all of a sudden they saw another turtle way out in the lake. It was sitting on a rock. It did not look like a scary monster!

“This is a very cute turtle,” said Ally. “I think it likes to swim. I hope it can get down off that rock!”

Then the turtle slid off the rock and swam away. It was another painted turtle.

All of a sudden they saw something else swimming in the water. Was it another turtle? No. It had a very long flat tail. And it had tiny little ears. And big teeth!

Daddy said it was a beaver!

“This beaver is just going home to its beaver house,” Daddy said. “It must be time for dinner!”

Shannon and Ally were very excited. They had seen three turtles and a beaver. These creatures were not scary monsters. They all looked very interesting.

Then on the way home they saw something move in the grass. What was it? Was this one a Monster? Would it bite them?

It jumped into the long grass. It was a spotted fawn just like Bambi!

“What a pretty fawn!” said Shannon.

“It jumps so high!” said Ally. “I would like to jump like that!”

Shannon said, “I would like to swim like a turtle and jump like a deer! And swim home to my beaver house!”

Then Daddy held out his hand and on it was a beautiful creature. It had a long head and big eyes and pretty wings. Was it a monster? No, it was a dragonfly!

“Will it bite us?” Shannon asked.

“No,” said Daddy. “It is not a monster and it does not bite.”

And he held it up for Shannon and Ally to take a close look.

“It is very pretty,” said Ally. “Can I take it home?”

Daddy said, “No, it wants to live in the fields where it can play in the grass and eat bugs. It would die if you put it in a jar.”

So Shannon and Ally were happy to watch the dragonfly fly away.

Then they started for home. They were glad they had seen three turtles, a beaver, a fawn and a dragonfly. And none of them were scary monsters!

Suddenly they heard a noise in the long grass. They saw some ears and some long whiskers. Could this be their scary monster after all? Would it bite them?

NO!

It was just Grandma Kate’s cat! And it did not bite at all. At least not very much!
