In the photograph my father stands in his World War II aviator outfit outside his mother’s wood frame home. Next to him is a tricycle, probably mine from when I was four or five. He is bound up in brown leather pants and a leather jacket with the gigantic fleece collar that comes high up on his neck. An aviator’s scarf is neatly tucked into the half-zipped front. A leather cap comes down almost to his eyebrows with the goggles sitting high upon the crown of his head. He squints, almost as if in his cockpit sighting far out to the horizon, guessing what might be beyond. The handsome flyboy.
