Introduction
As modern women we are all trying to be all things to all people, as a generation we have been told that we can have it all, but do we really want it all? Personally, I only want the bits that don't make me take to my bed and sob! I don't want to be a domestic goddess every day. I do want to be good at my job, but I also want to play football with my son (well, maybe not football but something that doesn’t involve me yelling hysterically). Oh, and I would quite like a social life that isn't related to work and clients. Is that even possible? If I please myself, who will pay the bills? who will iron the underpants? and where will my next meal come from?
The art of creating time is not about walking away and joining a kibbutz, but the way in which we organise, prioritise and view ourselves. Especially the way in which we view ourselves, most of us take pride in being able to multi task, but is multi tasking good for us? Is the ‘brain clutter’ of multi tasking an efficient way to get things done? I say no, I would suggest that it is far healthier to do one task at a time and do it well, then move on to the next. We all have a myriad of lists in our heads, the fridge is hidden under sticky notes, our laptops blink expectantly and our families vie for attention. The fast pace of society urges us to feed the baby whilst dealing with those all important emails and cooking a healthy meal for the family. In the grand scheme of things the time taken to feed the baby is a mere blink of an eye, the world will not stop turning whilst you take time out to be with your child, emails will not self destruct if not dealt with in real time and a bowl of quick pasta and salad is a healthy meal!
