“I’ve got an orb,” Erik whispers into the camcorder. His moon face looms ghastly green in the night-vision scope. “It’s moving along the ceiling.”

“I see it,” says Jerry, a tall gangly fellow ghost chaser on the evening escapade in the abandoned farm house on the Narragansett Trail in Buxton, Maine. He tracks the arcing ball of light with his view screen.

“What are you two looking at?” calls the ghost from behind them. “I am right here! Oh, you fell for one of those stupid light anomalies again. God, you are worse than a monkey after a shiny bauble. When will you learn that it’s just reflective dust? There’s tons of it in this run-down old house, and you’re kicking it up all over! I’d sneeze if only I had sinuses, but I’m afraid they became worm food some time ago.”

Sweat glistens on the skin of Erik’s plump face. He raises his voice recorder and asks, “Is there someone here?”

“I just told you I was. God, the living are so stoooopid,” gripes the ghost. “Is this thing on?” An invisible finger taps the shotgun microphone.

“Are you here because you want to be here, or are you trapped?” queries Jerry.

“What do you think? Just look at this dump!” the spirit retorts.

“If you’re here, give us a sign,” Jerry prompts.

“What is with you ghost hunters and your idiotic,” she lowers her voice to imitate a man, “‘give-us-a-sign’ line? You think that works to pick up spirits? I do this only because I’m desperate.” Unseen feet prance on the creaky hardwood floor.

At the sound, the two men look around. “What was that?” Erik asks.

“Probably just the house settling,” Jerry rationalizes.

“Typical guy logic,” snipes the chagrined eidolon. “How about I chuck a book down from the shelf? Will that convince you?”

A thud resounds from behind. The men jump. “Oh, my God! What was that?” Jerry reacts. They click on their LED flashlights. The beams crisscross across the floor to land upon a book fallen from the shelf.

“Was that you pushing the book off the shelf?” asks Erik.

“Who else would it be?” the disgruntled disembodied huffs.
