Why Are Some Foods Better Than Others For Healing
Chapter One
Why Are Some Foods Better Than Others For Healing
Each food that God provided for us to eat has its very own special nutrients that were meant not only to eat, but also to keep us young, beautiful and healthy. In the Garden of Eden, it has always been assumed that the offending fruit was an apple. We don't know this for sure as the Bible doesn't really say what fruit it was. It could just as well of been a pear, peach, orange, pomegranate, or any of the hundreds of fruits that we have today. However, we know it was good, delicious, nutritious and beautiful. Aren't fruits one of the most beautiful and delicious foods we eat everyday? Yummy, just bite into that delicious orange or apple and let the juice run down your chin. When I was a kid we had a grapefruit tree loaded with grapefruit at our fingertips in our yard. How I loved to sit and peel one of those scrumptious grapefruit and sit in the shade eating blissfully away, letting the juice run down my chin so happily.
So we know that God provided all these amazing fruits as foods to keep our bodies healthy and young, therefore we are going to put fruit high on the list of the 100 Amazing Foods For Seniors.
Now, think about this. What was the first food you ever put in that beautiful mouth of yours? Did you guess it? Yes, it was MILK. Got Milk? God intended for us to drink milk. He made the woman so that she would produce the perfect food for our little tummies to ingest as soon as we let out our first cry. It's a wonder we didn't cry MILK! So milk will also be a food high on our list of the 100 Amazing Healing Foods For Seniors.
What comes into our minds when we think about something good to eat? I can think of all sorts of food because I love to eat any and everything, but some of my favorite foods center around vegetables. I grew up in a Southern family, and my mother cooked all kinds of vegetables. She knew how to make them taste so delicious that we could have been eating a Strawberry Pie and not have been as happy as we were eating her southern cooked vegetables. Her Secret? Most of the vegetables she cooked were right out of the garden that my dad kept going all year long. We had collard greens, mustard greens, turnip greens, radishes, lettuce, tomatoes, corn, peanuts, beets, okra, green onions and much more. He would gather them from the garden, wash and clean them, bring them into the kitchen for her to put her magic touch on them as she happily cooked away for her large family. If you would like to hear more about my mother, read my book, Stolen Away A True Story. She was one of the most amazing women that has ever walked this good earth.
Another secret to these vegetables my mother cooked was bacon, ham, ham hock, and salt pork. This was a must in every southern kitchen and now we know the reason why. It made these vegetables taste heavenly. She would also add a little sugar to the vegetables as they boiled away on the old gas, wood or kerosene stove. She cooked on all types of stoves in her lifetime and no matter what kind of stove she used, the food was always delicious and nutritious. Of course we never thought of nutrition back then, we just sat and ate heartily three times a day. So vegetables will definite be a very important part of the 100 Amazing Healing Foods For Seniors.
Meat was not as important in our family meals, but some kind of meat was always cooked daily. It seemed the meals were planned around the vegetables with a small portion of meat included. We all loved chicken and they were raised by my mother and cooked to perfection every Sunday. We always had southern fried chicken on Sunday along with homemade biscuits or cornbread and lots of vegetables. Another meat dish we had was meatloaf. She could cook the most delectable meatloaf I have ever tasted. I still make her meatloaf by the same recipe she handed down to us. We had an occasional steak, pork chops, pork roast, ham, turkey and other meats my dad would hunt and prepare for mom to cook.
Yes, my dad was a hunter. In his lifetime, he had even hunted for a living, so he knew just how to get the good tasting meat for my mom to cook. I remember the days when she would be in the kitchen all day making hog headcheese.
She also did a lot of the canning of vegetables and there would always be rows of her jarred vegetables lined up neatly in our kitchen.
So meat and vegetables are going to be an important part of our 100 Amazing Healing Foods For Seniors.
Now, can you think of something that we might have left out of our lists? What meal would be complete without desserts? Yes deserts are important to our healthy eating. Having deserts gives us a happy tummy and a happy tummy is a healthy one. So without any further adieu, let us get started on our 100 Amazing Healing Foods For Seniors.
