All About Craps

Considered the most exciting game in the gambling world, Craps can be rather intimidating to most people. But don’t be fooled. It is actually a fairly simple game with two basic bets and very attractive odds.

The modern game of Craps was probably based on an English game named Hazard that was popular in the middle ages. There is evidence that the game was played by soldiers in the twelfth century during the Crusades. The French version, known as Craps, first appeared in New Orleans around 1800. Improvements were made to the game in the early 20th century.

How to Play Craps

Craps is played on a large table with a pair of dice. Depending on the size of the table, a maximum of 20 people can play at any given time.

At the start of a new game and once all bets have been placed, the stickperson (see table layout on the next page) will pass a handful of five dice to the shooter. It is up to the shooter to briefly inspect the dice and choose two, returning the rest to the stickperson. The shooter then makes his or her first roll, which is called the Come Out roll. During each roll, both dice are required to hit and bounce off the far side of the table wall. Bets can continue being placed until the dice are rolled.

Craps is played in rounds, with the Come Out roll beginning each round. If a Come Out roll results in a 2, 3, 7, 11, or 12 the round ends. If either a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 is rolled, that number becomes the “Point.” Once a Point number is established, the round stays active until a 7 is rolled, causing the round to end.

The word Craps refers to a dice roll that equals 2, 3, or 12 and the player rolling the dice “craps out” when one of these numbers comes up on the opening roll. In the game of Craps one player is designated as the “shooter” and the other players bet on the outcome of each roll of the dice.

A Craps table is divided into three sections: two outer end grids and a center grid. The two outer sections are mirror images of each other; their betting grids are identical.

The center portion of the table contains the riskier, one-roll bets and is often called “the box.” While these center or box bets have higher payoffs, the odds of hitting one are slim.
