INTRODUCTION
This book is about the work of science fiction writer Paolo Bacigalupi, and is a companion to the Paolo Bacigalupi (ology) website http://paolobacigalupi.blogspot.com and collects the content found at the site. The various entries and elements can also be browsed there.
Bacigalupi is a writer often working in the near future dystopia subgenre, with the major work being a series of stories set in a post-oil Thailand striving to resist food monopolies.
The book contains an analysis of the elements of his published stories, plus summaries of the work explaining what they are about, and a classification.
It also contains details of and links to free works online, encyclopedia, bibliography, interview and other such reference works, as well as the author's presence on the internet and other categories of interest.
There is also a concordance for each story included at the end, with the stories in alphabetical order.
The works appear here in reverse chronological order of appearance at Paolo Bacigalupi (ology).

Elements of the story are broken down into types of characters, places, concepts, technology, vehicles, weapons, food, media, races, animals and plants.

These are references to the approximate relative importance of the element as follows :
4.0 = Major element
3.5 = Standard element
3.0 = Minor element
A 0.0 indicates that the story, work or reference is one for which I have not seen an actual complete copy.
Characters being the most important elements, the "z " tags are self-explanatory, and the numbers correspond:
5.0 = Series character
4.5 = Recurring character
4.0 = Major character
3.5 = Supporting character
3.0 = Minor character

"I'd stalked William Gibson at one point at a book signing and had asked him what his secret to success was. You know I was a very hungry, very needy sort of writer and was just looking for any kind of a clue about how the whole thing worked. I sort of hovered over his shoulder while he was signing other people's books. I hit him with all of these questions and one of the things that he said was that he'd written short stories until somebody would take him seriously and that was when he managed to actually sell a novel. So I sort of took that to heart and went home and sat down and was like: 'OK, so I need to write a short story. How the fuck do I do this?'
So I bought some science fiction magazines--fantasy and science fiction magazines and stuff-- and read all of the short stories in them and went, 'OK, I just need to write something better than any these things.' I sat down and started banging away and eventually what I got was "Pocketful of Dharma." "

"Amazon.com: What do you like most about short fiction?
Paolo Bacigalupi: I like that there's a clarity to short stories that tends to get lost when you write to a longer form. The essence of the thing seems to be better encapsulated in short stories, thanks to the enforced discipline of trying to keep a story to 10,000 words. I mostly write novelettes, which gives me enough time to build a world and to give the reader an experience, but isn't so long that you get tangled up in tangential plotlines and extraneous detail. There's just not much room for muddy thinking in the short form; you get in and you get out. And the result for me is that a story often boils down to a single scene that will hopefully resonate with the reader long after they put the story down. I think that's what I like most about the short forms: you don't lose that key scene and you don't get a muddy experience. If I do my work right, I can burn an image into a reader's mind.With novels, there can be dozens of brilliant moments, but they all sort of sludge together. The take-away just doesn't seem as strong. It can be deep or rich or immersive, but the hammer blow of the story is muted."

I did actually try to get them published. My agent shopped all of them, and I ended up getting a lot of interest, without any final commitment. Typically, I'd have one editor fall in love with the story, and then it would be killed by other editors, stuff like that. With my first sci-fi novel, I actually turned down a publishing offer, because my agent felt the advance was too low. Looking back, maybe it was, maybe it wasn't. At the time I was feeling pretty good about myself, and was confident that I'd write more novels, so I was able to walk away from the offer. Now, older and more bitter, I might go back and take it. Who knows?"

"Bacigalupi said that the other aspects of the story came from a variety of sources. "The intellectual property and patenting of grains [in the story] came from news reports I'd read about an attempt by a U.S. company to patent basmati rice, even though it was historically used in India and was naturally occurring. The 'GMO' and the 'sterility controls' on grains came from discussions with friends of mine who are farmers and who are concerned about the advent of ag technologies that are designed to maintain control of corporate seedstocks. (Read about the Terminator gene if you want some background on the idea.) So 'The Calorie Man' is really a sort a mash-up of a bunch of different trends and ideas that were either interesting or worrisome or creepy to me."

"Well, I really do want to entertain people. I very much hope that my stories always function well as stories, and that they take the reader on an interesting journey. That's a top concern for me. But yeah, I have other agendas as well. I also hope the stories cause people to reflect on their present and perhaps pay close attention to the world around them. "When you start writing a story, do you need to have a clear agenda in mind?
It varies. With something like "Pump Six" I was interested in endocrine disruptors and intelligence shifts-- that one had an agenda and a plan right from the start. With something like "Yellow Card Man" I was just interested in exploring a character and seeing what I could learn about him. With other stories, I think I've got one plan or idea that I want to write, and it turns out that I'm completely wrong-- those stories are more like discovered objects. Like walking into a store thinking you're shopping for lawn furniture, and walking out carrying lingerie. All you can think is "huh?" I wrote a story recently called "The Gambler" for Lou Anders' Fast Forward 2 anthology that really came out of nowhere. Total surprise. So I guess the answer is that I definitely need *something* interesting to jump start a story: an image, an idea, an agenda, whatever, but I try not to stay too committed to it. If I find something better along the way, I let the story change."

"There has been a process over the last, say, twenty years, maybe a little more, to really despise the government and the safeguards the government has in place. So what you see is the FDA and the USDA and the Federal Communications Commission, all of these are relatively emasculated agencies at this point. They don't do the things they were supposed to do. In some cases they are almost completely beholden to the corporations that they're supposed to be overseeing. You see that in Colorado with something like the Colorado Oil Gas Conservation Commission, which up until very recently was entirely staffed with people with ties to the gas industry. You see stuff like that and you say, okay, there is a role for government. The idea of an absolutely unfettered free market, there can only be horror from that.
Fantastic Reviews (FR): Well, even under the theory. I've studied a lot of economics, and I believe in free-market capitalism, and yet even if you study the basic theory, externalities are part of the theory. There are certain things where, you do things that cause other people to pay the cost, and why should you give a damn about them if someone else is paying for it?
Paolo Bacigalupi (PB): Right, and so clean air, and all these other things, something like the Clean Water Act and the Endangered Species Act are designed to address problems with externalities. The problem right now is we're in a situation where the rhetoric in this rah-rah free-market capitalism - which does absolutely have a lot of benefits - has gotten to the buzzword level where you can't actually have any rational discourse about it. At the same time, the I-want-my-government-so-small-I-can-drown-it-in-the-bathtub theory has gotten so much currency that you end up in a position where we really are playing with fire in a lot of different ways. So those things are always in the back of my mind."

The protagonist is a Pop Squad officer. Their job is to find and kill illegitimate children and do whatever is necessary to find the mothers and fathers if possible. With excessively large bore ammunition.
Blowing the brains out of one kid and watching its toy dinosaur fall particularly affects him this time. Even more so when his lover is given a brontosaurus toy after a virtuoso performance of a symphony she has worked on for fifteen years. He has a strange spell after this. She also has a rejuvenation treatment during the story.
However, back on the job soon after, hunting down kids. One particular child, Melanie and her mother also give him pause. He takes the time to ask why she did, why breed? She tells him, and even though he tells them they are unlikely to get away with it - no rejuvenation for daughters with no documentation, either - he lets them live and walks away.

Travis is one of the smartest people around. However, he didn't even finish high school, but he can read. He and Maggie are trying for a pregnancy, but having no luck.
People are getting stupider because of all the toxins in the environment, and have begun to not breed true in many cases.
His job involves keeping the sewage pumps working, and Pump Six has gone, with too many parts broken and no-one knowing enough to fix them. Realising he needs help, he goes to a university for help, but there is no-one left there smarter than he is with the requisite knowledge. A faculty wife from the old days tells him this.

""A lot of what I write is so grim and depressing. The stories are designed to hurt. And when I'm writing them, I also feel hurt. It's hard to do. This was an opportunity to write a story that wasn't about hurt, and it felt good."
If Bacigalupi has learned anything from his own journey into darkness, it's that even dystopic writers must have their fun now and then. Last summer he was invited to speak at a symposium on sustainability in Kyoto, Japan. He marveled at the irony of such an invitation, the absurdity of flying halfway around the world to talk about reducing your carbon footprint — then embraced the hypocrisy and took the free trip.
He now has a major publisher (Little, Brown) and potentially a much larger audience in the young-adult field than he's ever enjoyed before — so large, in fact, that Night Shade signed him to a two-book deal to ensure that he keeps writing adult novels, too. ("I knew I had to put significant money on the table to keep him writing science fiction for me," Lassen says.) Yet he frets about how best to get children, especially boys, to read books, and whether his 1,500-square-foot house is too much dwelling for three people.
He agonizes over the trade-offs of raising his son in a place like Paonia. It's nice to run into people, he says, except when you don't want to see them."

PLOT
Lalji and Creo work the rivers in the USA, looking to get buy in this world of biologically supplied calories as energy and proprietary crops that don't breed.
A generipper wants to hire Lalji to transport him to where he can seed the current mass crops with additional seeds that will make them fecund again - and given these companies and crops supply the world, it will spread rapidly. He also has a young charge.
Lalji reluctantly agrees to take both of them, but they run into trouble, in an armed IP police boat, and they realise who Bowman the generipper is. A shootout happens, leaving only Lalji and the girl Tazi alive. Disposing of the bodies, they decide to move on, and the girl reveals that the food supply they brought is actually this new seed variety. So even with Bowman dead they can still carry out his task.
