“So, tell me again why you won’t go to Prom with Jared?” Suzanna asked Chloe.

“I’m just not interested in going. I don’t know what else to tell you,” Chloe replied.

“It makes no sense at all to ME! Jared’s like the hottest guy in school and he asked YOU to go to Prom with him. What the hell is WRONG with you?”

Chloe wasn’t going to admit it, but she had actually started to ask herself that very same question. Yes, she knew Jared was gorgeous by anyone’s standards, and what he saw in her she couldn’t fathom. However, she just didn’t feel right about leading him on because he had made it more than evident how he felt about her. If she agreed to go to Prom with him, it would give the impression of making him as a possible boyfriend. No, she just couldn’t do it. In the meantime, Suzanna was waiting for an answer.

“HEY! Earth to Chloe!” Suzanna exclaimed.

“I’m sorry, Sue, I just zoned out there for a minute. I don’t really have an answer for you,” Chloe said. “I just know that I don’t want to go to Prom and I don’t want to go with Jared.”

“Well, you’re just one weird bitch,” proclaimed Suzanna. “Anyway, SOME of us are NOT weird and we need to go shopping for a dress. So I’m going to take off now.”

Chloe walked her friend to the door and bid her goodbye. With one more plea to change her mind, Suzanna left to head to the mall. Chloe waved and closed the door. Walking into the kitchen, she grabbed a soda from the refrigerator and a bag of chips to snack on while she studied. Once she got back to her room, though, she found she couldn’t concentrate on her homework.

The thing that was standing out the most in her mind was what she had seen yesterday afternoon as she was leaving school. Ms. McKenzie, her English teacher, was being picked up in the back parking lot of the school by a very attractive woman. Chloe watched Ms. McKenzie get into the car and passionately kiss the other woman. She gasped and dropped her backpack, which made a noise that got Ms. McKenzie’s attention. Cursing her clumsiness, Chloe was scurrying to pick up her books when suddenly a hand was there helping her. Hardly daring to look up, she knew it was Ms. McKenzie.

“Oh Chloe,” she said. “I’m so sorry I startled you. I hope this won’t affect your opinion of me, but that’s my girlfriend in the car there. Can this please just be our secret? I don’t want to lose my job here and I just might if they find out.”

“Um oh, no Ms. McKenzie,” stammered Chloe. “I won’t say anything, I promise. You’re the best teacher I have so I don’t want to do anything to mess that up. Don’t worry.”

“Thank you so much, Chloe,” Ms. McKenzie enthused. “I’m really grateful for that.”

Chloe had her backpack all sorted by now and bid her teacher goodbye. As she drove home, she kept seeing the kiss between the two women in her mind. There was a very warm and tingly feeling that she experienced whenever she focused on the way their mouths met. Her stomach had some butterflies, too, that she didn’t understand. She just knew that it was something she’d never really felt before.

Now, in her room, Chloe was thinking about that scene once more. Then she started to carry that thought even further back to the first time she entered Ms. McKenzie’s classroom and saw her standing at the chalkboard. She was tall, with shoulder length dark hair and bright blue eyes. Her legs were muscular and beautiful, as was the rest of her body. You could really tell that she took care of herself. Chloe had not been able to take her eyes off of this woman, which was a good thing because she was expected to be facing forward and paying attention. However, later she couldn’t have begun to tell anyone what that class had been about. Even now, English class was the brightest part of her day.
