Jennifer stood at the top of the stairs as she watched her Dad and stepmom Karen greet David. He was tall and muscular, with a mop of dark curls on top of his head. His eyes were bright and green as they wandered up the stairs to find her. He gave her a little wink when he saw her.
“Hey there, little sis!” He called out obnoxiously as Jennifer reluctantly descended the stairs. Jennifer’s father had married his mother a few months ago, and she had only met David a handful of times before that. He was almost twenty and had been at college when Karen moved in. Apparently he had decided to take some time off, and that meant he had to crash at Jennifer’s house.
“Don’t call me that.” She said politely for her father’s sake, which sent her a warning glare.
David smirked, then he reached out and tweaked the tip of her nose. “Adorable.” He grinned playfully. She scrunched up her nose and glowered at him. She had just graduated from high school, and was looking forward to her summer. She would start college in the fall and she wanted to pack in as much fun as possible before then. Now she had to share a house with him.
“Hey Jenny, maybe you could show David his room.” Karen suggested, hoping the two would get along.
“You mean my room?” Jenny replied with animosity. Since David would be staying with them she had been forced to bunk in with her little sister. Sharing a room with an eight year old was like living with a foul sewer creature.
