You have probably heard of Santa Claus and The Easter Bunny but not many of you have heard of me. My name is Mathilda and I am The Valentine Goat. I am a grey and white miniature goat. I live in a nice warm barn with my friends the other goats, sheep and ponies. Farmer Pete takes good care of us. His daughter Tonny talks to me. She is one of the few humans who really knows about The Valentine Goat. Tonny helps me by buying supplies and helping me send packages to the other mini goats who work with me. These goats deliver special presents to children to help remind them that someone loves them. Some of these children know that they are loved, some just need reminding and to others a gift from the Valentine Goat is one of the only times they get a personal items. My team and I don’t hand out candy, and we don’t get wish lists mailed to us. We like to give children something that will last, and be used, like a book, paper and pens or a kit for teaching them something. We don’t have any magic powers so our gifts are left on the door step in a heart shaped box which has a goat shaped sticker on it that says, “Thinking of you. Love from The Valentine Goat.” Every goat on my team has a human contact person. These humans are special because they understand animals. This human gets the gifts Tonny sends them at the post office and then helps his or her goat friend package and label the gifts. On Valentine’s Eve the human and the other Valentine Goats on my team drive around their area delivering gifts. I don’t know how but we are able to find out about all the children around the world. Names appear on our lists and we don’t know how they got there. I’ve stopped caring about how they get them. The important thing is that they do and that we get to give them something special. Even though I don’t get to see the children receive their gifts and see the happiness, I feel it. I feel happy doing what I am. I am lucky to be The Valentine Goat. I may never be as famous as Santa Claus or The Easter Bunny but that’s okay with me. I don’t need to be famous to make a difference in the world. The children will also never be able to personally thank each goat’s human but the humans know that they are also changing lives. To change a life is a special thing; it happens one action at a time. Anyone can do it, and it always makes a difference if you try.
