Chapter 1
Allison (or Allie as she prefers to be known) and I had been married for a couple of years and were both in our late twenties, at the time this all happened.
Allie is a town planner and works for the local council reviewing building applications and such like. She likes her job but hates the bureaucracy that goes with working for local government.
I work as an electrical engineer for a large electricity supply company. It’s a good job but you never know when you could get called-out, especially in periods of bad weather.
Being relatively newly married and trying to buy a house, meant that the two of us didn't have a lot of spare cash and therefore couldn’t afford to go out socialising as much as we might have liked; but we did have a small circle of friends that we would either take turns hosting for dinner or go out with for drinks. Two of those people were Sarah and Mike.
Allie & Sarah have been best friends since their early teens, when they were at school together. They both work in the town centre and often meet for lunch. Sarah is normally the more outgoing of the two, but if Allie has had a few drinks then the two of them are as bad as each other.
Sarah and Mike were living together and had been engaged for about a year. Mike had a young son (Karl) from his previous marriage. His wife had custody but Karl stayed with him and Sarah at weekends. That meant that we tended to see them on Friday nights before Karl arrived on Saturday.
Sarah works for a local children’s hospice, in admin, and organises most of the local fundraising activities for the hospice. This Christmas one of those activities was staging a Santa Grotto at a small Garden Centre, next to the shopping centre. Usually they have it inside the shopping centre but the local council had other ideas this year.
