Beth couldn’t wait to shake the sleepy little town and move to the city. She was sick of everything small, small town, small stores, and especially small minds. As soon as she finished school at the community college she moved away and never looked back. She had always worked with children and so sought a job in child care, knowing she could make a living and support herself in her new life.

Norma was a coworker. Not a close friend at first. Still they had a little fun together and joked around at work. They frequently got together for happy hour after work hours, and had a great time laughing at the other people they worked with.

Norma was Beth’s assistant. Being an easy going boss, if Norma just showed up anything she did after that was fine. Norma had a 6 year old, a single parent. “She got caught” She was a misfit among her family and was often teased about wanting to spend all of her time in the city library where she studied African American history and Art. They got along well, both of them accepting the other person, in spite of any cultural differences.
