Mountain High

“You ready?” Hannah asked as she hoisted the backpack onto her shoulders. Zoey slipped the last water bottle into her backpack and answered, “Just about.” The early morning sun was just peaking over the trees, but even at this high elevation, it was already hot. Zoey lifted her pack onto her small frame, buckled it tight, and said, “OK, let’s go!”

The two women walked to the end of the parking area and through a pair of granite boulders marking the entrance to the wilderness area. Hannah had been backpacking since she was a teenager, but this was only Zoey's fourth trip. Since Zoey had gone with Hannah the first time a couple of months back she had become a committed hiker. She loved the freedom and the solitude. Each of the previous trips seemed to reinvigorate her. All the problems of the real world melted away in the High Sierras and they seemed to stay away, at least for a little while once she returned home. Zoey had heard the term mountain high, and figured that feeling is what it meant.

Zoey followed Hannah up the dusty trail. They had some open country to cross before the tall pines and hemlock ahead would shade them from the hot sun. Their camp lay about six miles away. Hannah had been there before, but Zoey had not. Hannah told Zoey of its beauty, the small lake with a small white sandy beach of decomposed granite, the soaring granite cliffs and the perfect little camp spot that caught the morning sun. She told her that the camp was near the trail, but she assured Zoey she rarely saw another hiker.

The description intrigued Zoey. It sounded beautiful and the solitude was exactly what she needed. It had been almost six months since she discovered her ex-husband's affair. For over a year, he carried on with a woman from his office before Zoey became suspicious. She was always too trusting, eager to see the best in people, especially the man she loved. However, even she couldn't ignore the signs forever.

She followed her husband, Everett one night when he was supposed to be going to his judo class. He didn’t. Everett wound up at a condo in Redondo Beach and went inside. Zoey waited and then knocked on the door. A woman in a short robe answered and Zoey pushed her way in. Everett was in her bed, naked.

He tried to explain and make excuses, but Zoey would have none of it. She filed for divorce within the week and Everett, to his credit, didn’t fight it. She got the house, the Lexus and a nice alimony payment. Everett apologized after the divorce and Zoey forgave him, but he had broken her heart. She hadn't seen him since and really didn't want to.

The crying had stopped for the most part, but she still felt empty and betrayed. Hannah had been through something similar a few years back, so it seemed natural to Zoey when Hannah proposed a celebratory adventure once the divorce was final. Zoey didn't feel like celebrating, but she knew some time in the wilderness would help her heal. Time to think, a good friend's understanding shoulder to cry on and a few bottles of wine would do her good, she reasoned.

Even though Hannah had transferred the wine to lighter containers, it was taking a toll on their backs. Upon hearing Zoey's grumbling about two miles from the trailhead, Hannah reminded her they only had to carry the wine one-way. Before long, they found the shade of the trees and took a break. The trail was steeper from here on out, but at least the hot sun would be off their backs. A few gulps of water, a handful of GORP and they were off again. Hannah predicted they would be lounging in camp by early afternoon.

In reality, it was closer to four o'clock. Hannah seemed to be full of energy, but Zoey was spent. The hike had taken almost eight hours and with the breakup of her marriage, she already felt tired most of the time. Hannah was nice enough to offer to set up their camp. A small tent, a couple of sleeping bags was about all they had brought besides food and the means to cook and eat it.

Even though it wasn't allowed, Hannah always built small campfires. It was a holdover from her trips as a teenager with her parents. She had always told Zoey it wasn't camping without a fire. Zoey couldn’t deny that a nice fire not only kept them warm but also made their camps seem more homey and comfortable.

After a while, Zoey began to regain some of her energy. She was hungry and after filtering some water from the lake, she cooked dinner. Hannah built a small fire ring in a patch of soft grass where the meadow transitioned to the rocky shore of the lake and started a cozy little fire to heat some water.

Dinner wasn't much, freeze-dried lasagna, white rice and powdered apple cider, but after the long day of hiking it tasted wonderful. Hannah added wood to the fire she had scavenged and sat across the fire from Zoey as they both relaxed and began to enjoy camp.

The women enjoyed the peace and quiet as the sun set. Soon it was dark and Hannah broke the silence, “So, you feeling better? You seemed out of sorts on the hike up.”

“Yeah, I feel much better. The mountains always seem to put me at ease,” Zoey answered, “I was just thinking while we drove that I'm getting tired of, I dunno...thinking about the divorce and Everett all the time. I think, it's time I moved on. I can't wallow in self-pity forever.”

“Good for you! I'm glad to hear you sounding positive. Since you're single now, we can hang out, do girl things, you know.”

“Like this?” Zoey asked knowing that wasn't exactly what she meant.

“Yeah, sure! This and a whole lot more. When's the last time you were out dancing or shopping or went to a party?”

“Too long. I love dancing but Everett never wanted to go. When we get back, we'll have to plan something.”

“It's a date. I don't know about you, but I'm wiped. You wanna hit the sack?” Hannah said then yawned and added, “Fire's dying anyway.”

“Yeah, I'm beat. What's on the schedule tomorrow? Are we gonna try and catch some fish?”

“In the morning, yeah. Then I figured we could take a short hike and I could show you the area.”

“Sounds good,” Zoey said and headed off to bed, but not before relieving herself back in the trees. When Zoey returned, she offered Hannah the flashlight, “You going?” Hannah shook her head as she finished pouring the last of the filtered water on the fire, “I'm good.”

“You must be part camel.” Zoey said.

“Nah, wait until we break into that wine tomorrow night. I'll be up every hour after that.”

“I almost forgot about the wine. I can't wait. A plastic cup of cheap wine and a small illegal fire. How romantic,” Zoey teased.

“Don't forget about the beautiful sunset when the mosquitoes come out,” Hannah joked.

“It doesn't get any better than that,” Zoey said sarcastically and then added seriously, “But I wouldn't trade this for anything.”

“Me either,” Hannah agreed and then they hugged good night, “I'll be in after I hang up the food. We don't want a bear drinking our wine.”

“God forbid!” Zoey said and crawled into the tent, “Good night,”

“Nite, Zoe.”

Zoey was asleep before Hannah ever got to the tent.

After a quick breakfast of oatmeal, dried fruit and hot tea, the girls tried their hand at fishing the small lake below camp, hoping to catch some fish for dinner. Though the fishing was slow, they managed to catch a couple of trout big enough for dinner. Zoey was still getting used to the idea of touching fish and even though Hannah had showed her how to clean a trout, she wasn’t quite ready to do it herself.

Hannah cleaned the trout, placed them in a big Ziploc bag with some wet grass, and then set the bag in the shade. Zoey filled a small daypack with some GORP, a couple of apples, some jerky and, of course, some water and they set off to explore the area. Hannah showed Zoey the small waterfall on the stream that fed the little lake back at camp. She showed her the small peak that had a spectacular view of the next drainage. Finally, Hannah showed her the huge granite slab that was behind their camp.

The beauty amazed Zoey. She understood why this had become one of Hannah's favorite camps. She appreciated Hannah showing it all to her. Hannah had always been there for her. She had met her at the gym after Hannah’s divorce a few years back . Hannah had gained a few pounds while she was married. Like Everett didn't like dancing, Hannah's ex wasn't into hiking. Now Hanna was in great shape and she hiked as often as her schedule would allow. Zoey wanted to accompany her more often and now she was free to do so. Just one day out here and Zoey was already on her mountain high.

The girls arrived back in camp with a few hours left until dinner. It was warm again, almost 90 degrees they figured. Hannah filtered some water, while Zoey gathered some wood for the fire. She gathered several armfuls, hoping they would linger about the fire, drinking wine and talking. As she dumped the last load onto the ground Hannah came up carrying a book and a towel, “I'm going down to the beach, wanna come?”

“Definitely. I'll be right there,” Zoey replied. She had been eyeing that beach since they arrived. It wasn't much, maybe the size of her dining room, but it was white sand washed down from the granite cliffs. She grabbed her towels and her Kindle and joined Hannah who already had her boots off, toes buried in the sand. Zoey settled in next to her, but it wasn't long before the sun and heat got to her, “Damn, why does it have to be so hot?”

“It usually isn't this hot up here. I've never been brave enough to go swimming, but I'm thinking about it.”

“Too bad we didn't bring suits,” Zoey said.

“Swim suits? Really? It's just us girls. I was thinking of going skinny dipping.”

Zoey blushed, “Naked?”

“Yeah, sure. You chicken?” Hannah teased.

“If you do it, I guess I'll do it.”

“Oh great! Now I gotta do it.”

Zoey and Hannah laughed and then Zoey said, “I bet it would feel awesome.”

“Fuck it, let's find out,” Hannah said as she stood up and pulled off her tank and then peeled down her hiking shorts. Zoey laughed as she watched. Hannah was tall and thin with an athletic build. Her muscles were clearly defined under her deeply tanned skin, especially her abs. She worked out like a demon after her own divorce and it showed. Hannah's shoulder length hair was streaked in shades of gold and light brown. Despite her athletic build, her features were soft, almost girlish.

Hannah slipped out of her bra revealing her small breasts and her big, puffy, nipples and then stepped out of her panties, her pubic region free of any hair. She shot her panties at Zoey like a slingshot, “C'mon, slowpoke.”

Zoey stripped herself down to her panties as Hannah waded ankle deep into the water. She had been naked in front of Hannah in the locker room, but this was different. Zoey felt a little self-conscience. Unlike Hannah, Zoey was a little shorter than average and had a more ample frame. Her breasts were large and pendulous with large pink upturned nipples and her hips and thighs were generously proportioned.

The whole thing seemed a little naughty. She screwed up her courage and slipped her panties off. Zoey kept her pussy bare but had a thin strip of black pubes above that matched her sassy, bobbed hairdo. Zoey's skin was fair and flawless and her eyes where a striking green. Her features were sharp, her lips full and red and her smile warm and friendly.

“Is it cold?” Zoey asked.

“No, it's nice actually,” Hanna replied, goose bumps covering her tanned skin.

“You're a liar!”

“You got me. It's pretty damn cold, but it's invigora...,” was all Hannah got out as Zoey ran by and dove in splashing her with water and she Hannah yelled, “That wasn't nice!”

Zoey laughed, “Now you'll have to get all the way in.” Hannah rolled her eyes and walked out of the lake and over to a boulder nearby and observed, “You know it’s really deep right here,” and then jumped into the air, pulling her legs up to her chest. She didn't land near Zoey, but the splash soaked Zoey anyway.

“You're a bitch! You know that?” Zoey said in mock anger, “Too bad I'm already wet.”

Hannah swam over, stood up next to Zoey in the waist deep water and said, “This is pretty awesome.” Zoey had to agree. They swam awhile, but it didn't take long for the cold water to sap the warmth from their bodies. Back on the beach, they dried and slipped into their tanks and panties. They wore their boots back to the camp, but both traded them out for flip-flops.

Again, Hannah started a fire and Zoey made dinner. She prepared the trout they had caught with a little lemon pepper, couscous and freeze-dried blueberry cobbler. It was warm enough to stay in just their tanks and panties, even after the sun went down, if they stayed near the fire.

Hanna threw some wood on the fire and Zoey spread out a towel for them to sit on in front of the big rock near the fire. Hannah grabbed a couple of cups and one of the plastic bottles full of wine and sat next to Zoey.

“This was the best day I've had in a long time,” Zoey said.

Hannah smiled and poured a cup of wine, which she handed to Zoey, and another for herself and said, “Me too. Just about perfect.” The girls sat and drank while they talked. The combination of the thin mountain air, a light dinner and just plain being tired made the wine work its magic that much faster. Soon they were both rather buzzed.

“Is it me, or is this wine really, really strong?” Zoey asked.

“It must be the altitude. I'm feeling pretty good right about now and we're barely half way through the bottle.”

“Worse things could happen,” Zoey quipped.

“Oh yeah! This is pretty sweet. It's so beautiful up here. I'm glad I'm here with you, Zoe.”

“Me too, Hannah,” Zoey said and held her nearly empty cup out.

Hannah poured another cupful for Zoey and then topped off own cup. They sipped wine for a little while just enjoying the fire and the peace and quiet.

“Zoe, I'm kind of horny.”

Zoey almost spit her wine out, but recovered and swallowed before she laughed, “Where did that come from? You're fuckin' drunk, you know that?”

“No, I'm serious. I haven't been with anyone since my divorce. That's almost three years. I'm fucking horny.”

“Join the club Hannah. It's only been six months or so, but I've worn out three vibrators.”

Hannah stared at Zoey and then broke out laughing, “I can't believe you said that. I think you're drunk too.”

I'm not drunk, I'm just happy for once. I love this place and I love being here with you, Hannah. You're my best friend. I mean that,” Zoey said. She hadn't been this happy since, well, she honestly couldn't remember when she'd been this happy.

“You are drunk,” Hannah teased and leaned over and bumped her shoulder into Zoey's. They both giggled again.

“OK, maybe a little.”

“You know, you’re my best friend too, Zoe. As long as we're confessing how we feel, I want to say something. I'm kind of into girls,” Hannah stated.

“I know,” Zoey said.

“You do? How?”

“I'm a girl, I read minds,” Zoey joked and then added, “Seriously, it's totally obvious. You're always looking at other girls, checking them out. I've known since right after we met.”

“Why didn't you ever say anything?” Hannah asked.

“I don't care. I like you for who you are. Who cares if you like women?”

“Thanks. I'm glad it’s not a big deal. I wanted to say something before. I was afraid you wouldn't want to be friends anymore.”
