Introduction

Tarot is a known divinatory art. You can get face-to-face and online readings these days. Tarot is meant to work by manifesting forces within and without you. There are several ways to read the Tarot, and this book will approach some. Contrary to other divinatory arts, Tarot does not demand so much study as it does practice. It is a bit like using a computer: first you have to know all the components, but after that you practice until it becomes automatic. One of the big characteristics of Tarot readings is what we call passive mode, which, in occultism, means a state of mind in which you have to be open to the message that you receive. It is very important not to rationalize your readings or to change them to fit your clients’ (or your own) expectations. Once you become a slave to others’ or yours needs and emotions, you will be a slave to the spirits guiding you (if you choose to be assisted spiritually). If not, you will be captive of your own prejudices. That is why Tarot readers all use to say that if you lie in any reading, the cards won’t speak to you. Avoid this by all means.

And if you are to become a good Tarot reader, practice will work wonders for you. If you are willing to learn as you go along, consulting references to explore further meanings and alternative interpretations, soon you can become an exceptional reader of the arcana. That is why I don’t present a lot of further reading references. You have to work for yourself.

So…I wish you good readings!

Chapter I

No one knows how the Tarot came to be. Some trace it back to 1200 CE. According to one occultist thesis, the Tarot cards came from an occult centre of studies in Fez, Morocco. It has also been suggested that Tarot cards evolved from an old form of chess or vice-versa. It doesn’t matter if the cards had their origin in India, Egypt or China, but, from whatever country, they came to Italy. It is not important if they were introduced in our Western world through the Crusades, Arabs or gypsies. More important than the real Tarot’s age is its symbolism and wisdom.

Tarot has suffered lots of changes. Its imagery was modified according to the country’s history and individual ideas of the artist. That means original forms and interpretations were in part hidden by recent developments but kept a part of their symbolism. Today there are approximately 200 variations of Tarot and each card is a door to a mysterious world.

Tarot is a group of 78 cards distributed by 22 arcana named as major and 56 arcana known as minor. The arcane word is plural of Arcanum in Latin and it means secret.

Let’s check out their basic meanings. By basic we mean operational meanings, useful in Tarot readings.

The 22 Major Arcana

These are usually considered as the most important Tarot cards, because they point the divine influences in our day-to-day life or different stages of the soul in its way towards wisdom. Personally I have found that in the readings I perform the Major Arcana tell us about Fate’s manifestation and force in our daily experiences.

0 – The Fool

It represents rash decisions, impulsiveness, throwing your opportunities away, instability of feelings and mind, not keeping the doctor’s prescription, to be irresponsible and to follow one’s urges without considering others’ needs and expectations. For you it brings impulsive attitudes, mistakes, bad marks, lack of social integration and growing up crisis.

I – The Magician

This card means your willpower. The power of deciding lies in your own hands. Once you decide, external circumstances can be changed. It marks a new beginning – it may be a new job, a good test, a good mark in sports.

II – The High Priestess

She is a wise woman, an older female friend, a lover, a hidden relationship. When you are asking about a relationship and this card appears, usually it means the guy has another relationship. Consider wisely what you have to do. Listen to your inner voice. Your love is not mutual. It may be your mother, feminine authority or even a graduation.
