A Few Hours of a Smoker’s Life
2:00 pm
It had been raining throughout the day, like cats and dogs. When I came out of that unlucky house of Chaku khansama lane, that time also it was raining, but not profusely.
Chaku Khansama Lane is a dingy lane, which is very near to Sealdah Railway Station. This area has always been very crowded. Mostly lower middle class people live in this area. Most houses in this area are at least 100 years old. Houses are shabby with broken walls.
The sky was still so very dark. I used to take 3-4 mins by walking to reach the main road from the house called ‘Tilakdham’ of Chaku khansama lane. But today it seemed it was such a long distance. I was walking so fast, never walked so fast in my whole life, still it was taking so much time to reach the main road. Even if I wanted I could not run. Because if a 55 year old, grey haired man like me run like a 21 year old young chap, others might notice and could doubt something. But the thing was around this time, not much people were really around, even the street dogs were sleeping comfortably.
I would also give good naps once I reach home, I was thinking. Yes… For the last 6 months, I could not sleep well at night. I had almost spent sleepless nights. Happiness wasn’t there in my mind for the last six months. Lots of money, but no happiness in mind, was that possible? But I had been going through that phase, just because,…just because of that skinny bad man. The day he came to know all the secrets, I had never got a pinch of happiness since that day.
