Santa’s Boots

I rushed quickly down the hallway, trying not to drop anything. I was late. Again. If I didn’t get to the dressing chamber in time, I’d be demoted for sure. And since I’d only just been promoted from Stable-Elf, I was determined to keep my new position.

I ran through my checklist one last time. Hat, coat, mitts, belt, pants, boots. Did I have the boots? If I’d forgotten the all-important boots, Rilan would have my head. I had the boots, I realized in relief. And it even looked like I wasn’t the last to arrive. Or, at the very least, I’d made it to the dressing chamber before Santa.

I thought I could slip in unnoticed. I thought wrong. “There you are, boy!” Rilan snapped. He was a senior elf, in charge of seeing Santa fully dressed and equipped for tonight’s journey. His ears twitched and his eyes narrowed for a moment as he watched me place the boots by the door. “You dawdle one more time, Laren, and —”
