To make the Crewel Embroidery Welcome Sampler, you will need:
* a size 8 embroidery needle, the sharp kind for piercing fabric
* a piece of approximately 9-inch (30 cm) square non-stretchy, woven cotton fabric (since it's easiest to work with) that has already been washed and ironed
* a pencil
* the pattern printed on a thin, white piece of paper
* a 6-inch (15 cm) embroidery hoop
* embroidery floss (see the color suggestions below)
* a ruler
* a pair of scissors
* finishing supplies
Please take the time to wash and iron the fabric and prepare the threads before you start.
Color Suggestions
I believe in letting people choose their own color schemes because then you end up with something you know you like and that goes with your decor. That being said, I will explain what I used for the sampler in the photos and offer some suggestions for other color schemes.

The Sample in the Photos
Fabric: Country Cotton Solid, "Flesh" color (I would describe it as a pale peach.)
Threads: DMC 3842, 322, 747, 972, 975, 3836, 550
I chose to use DMC 975 for the liquid, but if you like black coffee or green tea, you are welcome to choose another color!
Other Color Ideas
Use a pale yellow fabric. Choose shades of forest green for the blues and maroon red for the purples.
Note that with any color scheme, the blanket stitches would look interesting in a variegated floss.
I chose to divide the pattern into 7 color areas. If you want to make it more or less, go ahead. A monochromatic color scheme with black stitching on white and then a color for the liquid in the cup could be very striking!
