Chapter 1

THE BUSY BODY NEXT DOOR

I’m out in my back yard ,diggin' a hole, and generally just mindin' my own business, when old Molly Morgan, as usual, is watchin' me from her roost on her back porch. I don't rightly know why it is people can't mind their own business and leave their neighbors to theirs, but she never does. She is almost always mindin’ mine. After a while, she picks up the phone and she starts ah makin' her calls.

"I think he's diggin' a grave" she claims, "in his back yard." She's talkin' to old Ebb Jenkins at the station, but she's starrin' right at me. Poor Eb is always the first one she picks on and he knowed right off who she is a talkin' 'bout. She always gives me grief. This time it just happens, she’s right. I suppose she just got lucky this time. Everyone has to get it right every now and again but, Yelp! That's exactly what I'm doin'. I'm diggin' a grave. Can't see where it might be any of her business though!
