Awakening

The gym was noisy. Class was in full swing.

She’d missed most of tonight’s session, but it couldn’t be helped. Some nights it was harder to sneak out of the house than others.

Megan slipped through the broad double-doors, and quietly edged toward the bleachers. No one noticed her, but she was used to that. Being invisible kept her safe.

Well, almost no one noticed her. She hid a faint smile when her sensei, Corey Roberts, abruptly straightened and turned, and his slate-grey eyes shot right in her direction. She was never invisible to him.

Without a single word, the message passed between them. She was here, she was safe. He could stop worrying.

A certain tension left his shoulders, and he turned back to face his other students with a lighter heart. He had worried. Megan’s drunken stepfather was abusive; that’s why she snuck out of the house twice every week to attend his martial arts classes. Richie had hit her before. Corey intended to make sure he never did it again.

After a while, one or two of the other students noticed her sitting quietly in the shadows, and nodded a quick greeting. But Corey had them sparring and kicking so fast that there was no time for them to wander over.

At last he sent the class through their final paces, twenty laps around the gymnasium. And then he casually wandered over, wiping his close-cropped hair with a towel. “Thought you weren’t going to make it at all,” he murmured with a smile. “Everything okay?”

“Yeah.” Her pulse was racing, making it difficult to concentrate on her soft reply. “I just had to wait a while, until Richie was caught up in a movie.”

He studied the faint flush that rose to her pale cheeks, then nodded. Richie liked to watch smutty porn in the living room, and he didn’t care if Megan saw him whacking off or not. In fact, Corey speculated with a grim scowl, he probably enjoyed embarrassing her.

“He hasn’t touched you again, has he?” It took an effort to keep his big fists from clenching at the thought.

Megan quickly shook her head. “No, not since that one time. I keep my bedroom door locked all the time now.”

“Good!”

He drew in a deep, steadying breath, then turned and shouted, “Okay, everyone, that’s it for tonight! Hit the showers!”

Mingled cheers and groans answered him. He watched in amusement as his newer students staggered after the more advanced ones. In moments, the big gym was empty.

“Wanta head out for coffee?” he asked, glancing sideways at Megan as he grabbed a bottle of water, and took a deep gulp. “I can be ready in ten minutes, if you can wait that long.”

Megan swallowed hard, then mustered a hesitant smile. “How about a walk on the beach instead?”

They hadn’t done that for a while. “Sure, that sounds nice. Full moon tonight?”

She nodded.

He knew how she loved watching the full moon rise over the restless ocean. It seemed to calm and soothe her. And he had to admit, he enjoyed it, too. Just one of the many benefits of living in paradise.

“Wait for me,” he said, and lightly touched her knee with his long fingers. Then he was gone, and only his subtle aftershave lingered in the space where he’d been standing.

Megan took a steadying breath herself, and jumped down to the polished wood floor. So far, everything was working out just the way she’d hoped.

When Corey came back out of the locker room, still toweling water from his damp hair, Megan was gone. He’d expected that. It was too dangerous for her to be seen walking out with him. He wasn’t worried about losing his job nearly as much as having some indiscrete soul tell Richie that they’d been seen together. Richie would make her pay for escaping the house, and ‘consorting’ with a man nine years older than she was.

And in this one rare case, Richie would be right. She was way too young--or he was way too old--for the erotic fantasies that spun through his fevered imagination every single time he saw Megan Lindstrom.

He could still remember the first time she’d crept into the big, noisy gymnasium. She’d been pale as a ghost, and almost visibly trembling, when he’d sauntered over to greet her. He was a physical man, so without thinking, he’d stuck his hand out and grabbed hers for a vigorous shake. She’d shrunk away from him like a whipped puppy. And all his protective instincts had kicked in.

His other instincts had kicked in, too, he remembered with a troubled frown. And ever since then, he’d had the hardest time keeping his hands off her!

Hardest time, period. Every time he saw her, he went hot and hard enough to pound nails into solid oak!

And that just wouldn’t do. She’d turned eighteen a few days ago, he thought, fingering the tiny box in his pocket. No longer forbidden fruit...and oh, how he yearned to pluck her from the vine, and feast to his heart’s content!

But he was twenty-seven, a retired Marine who’d seen and done damned near everything before he’d been injured over in Iraq, and sent home with a Purple Heart clutched in his bloody hand.

They had nothing in common.

And yet...Megan had captured a piece of his heart. Her big sapphire eyes and silky auburn hair haunted his dreams. He couldn’t imagine life without her shy smiles and subtle, clever wit.

He was marking time until she was old enough to move away from home--and move in with him. Until then, he’d have to continue keeping his hands to himself, and simply cope with the throbbing steel rod that tormented him every time she was near.

He’d figured on finding her outside, in the back lot, where he normally parked. And he wasn’t disappointed. A quick smile curved his lips as he strode across the lot to ‘his’ shadowed niche, and saw her emerge from beneath the nearest tree.

“Sorry I took so long.” He resisted the impulse to bend and kiss her. Someday...someday! But not yet. He didn’t want to scare her, and tonight she looked more tense than he’d seen her in a long time. “You ready?”

She nodded, and gracefully slid into the car while he shoved his gym bag into the trunk.

“You sure everything’s okay?” He glanced over at her as he started the car, and carefully backed out of the lot. “Richie hasn’t been giving you grief?”

How he wished she could simply move out, away from that ugly abusive jerk! What was her mother thinking, leaving an innocent girl in his clutches while she headed out nearly every night to party with friends?

“No...he’s actually been nice to me for the last few days,” she said, nervously moistening her lips. “Because it was my birthday, I think. He even gave me some money, and told me to go buy something pretty with it.”

“Well, you don’t turn eighteen every day,” Corey allowed with a smile. “I wasn’t going to mention it until we got to the beach. But I bought you a present.”

“You did?” Her eyes widened with startled pleasure.

“Uh huh. It’s in my pocket.”

Nothing like the present he’d really like to give her--the hot, hard one bobbing up and down inside his loose pants! But girls liked jewelry, so he was pretty sure the little box would please her.

The beach was only a five minute drive from the college. Gravel crunched under the tires as he pulled into the parking area, and found a sheltered spot to park. No telling who might be out and about on a gorgeous night like this. No sense in taking any chances...

Megan glanced at the distant horizon. “Moon ought to be up in about fifteen minutes,” she said with an eager smile.

He was already up...

God, he had to stop thinking like this!

Out of long habit, they both left their shoes in the car. The sand felt cool beneath their bare feet as they began wandering aimlessly along. Out here, there were no clocks, no cell phones, nothing to remind them of the passage of time. Only the silvery moon, which would be showing its full face soon.

No one else was out on the beach. Well, it was a weeknight, and most people did have to get up for work the next morning. Corey allowed himself to relax slightly.

They wouldn’t have to hide forever, and the day was growing steadily closer when he could take her away from her neglectful mother and abusive stepfather, and make her entirely his. Until then, he could only be grateful for the privacy.

“Happy birthday,” he said, reaching into his pocket. “I thought of you when I saw this.”

She stared at the tiny box for several moments, almost afraid to touch it. So many things had been taken away from her, on a whim or for no reason at all, that she’d grown afraid to trust anyone.

But not Corey. He had never done anything to hurt her. Only with him did she feel entirely safe and protected.

So, after another brief hesitation, she reached for the box, and slowly opened it.

A tiny unicorn pendant was nestled inside. “It’s beautiful!” she gasped, caressing it with gentle fingers.

“You’ll look beautiful wearing it.” Gently he took the box back, lifted the necklace from its gauzy padding, and opened the clasp.

Understanding, she gathered her long hair in one hand, and turned around so that he could fasten it around her throat. It felt cold against her warm skin. “Thank you, Corey!” she murmured. “No one’s ever given me anything so beautiful before!”

That made his heart ache. She deserved so much better than she’d gotten in life!

“I got myself a birthday present,” she added with a shy smile. “Would you like to see it?”

“Sure.” He touched the glittering unicorn with one finger, then stepped back a pace.

“Turn around.”

“All right.” Smiling, he obeyed her hesitant command. “Tell me when!”

She watched as he made a big show of staring up at the sky. Wonderful Corey, he always made her smile! The nerves that had tormented her all afternoon faded away.

Still, her fingers shook a little as she took a deep breath...and then began unbuttoning her soft white blouse.

“Okay.”

Corey turned back around...

“Jesus Christ!” His shocked exclamation echoed up and down the beach.

She’d opened her blouse, and let it fall down her back. He’d always known that she had an incredibly sexy body...but he hadn’t realized just how sexy until he saw her standing there wearing a lacy half-cup French bra!

The throbbing steel rod in his pants jolted erect so hard and fast that his knees nearly buckled.

His hands lifted, and he had to force them away from her tantalizing soft flesh. “Megan, what...?” Air clogged in his lungs, making his head reel. Desperately he grabbed the edges of her blouse and tried to pull them together again.

“Please, Corey!” She curled her fingers over his, stopping them, and then moved in a little closer so that his big hands were pressed against her soft breasts.

“Megan, you can’t... God!” He shuddered as the cool night air filled his head with her sweet, seductive scent. “What if somebody sees you?”

“You’re the only one I care about.” Her bottom lip quivered. She’d been so sure that he wouldn’t reject her!

Trembling, she stretched up on her toes, and lightly pressed her mouth against his. One hand circled his neck for balance, then stayed to stroke his warm skin.
