It was nearly dawn when Christopher opened his eyes, still more than half asleep until he remembered that it was Christmas Day and he was supposed to be running away from home. He sat up in the half light of pre-dawn and rubbed his eyes with the backs of his hands and yawned.

He had decided to leave the night before when his parents had told him once again, this time firmly, that Santa would not bring him a pony for Christmas.

A pony was all he had asked for on his birthday but his parents wouldn’t get him one. When he had sat on Santa’s lap at the mall Christopher asked Santa to bring him a pony. Santa had suggested a lot of other things. His parents had suggested a lot of other things. But Christopher knew what he wanted. So every night when he said his prayers, he asked for a pony for Christmas.

He knew a pony took a lot of care, that it needed a special place to stay. He had spent all day yesterday clearing all his toys from one corner of the garage. Then his parents had told him he would not be getting a pony from Santa for Christmas.

He had to have a pony. How could he be a cowboy without a pony? How could he learn to rope calves and be in a rodeo without a pony? How could he be in a wagon train or race with Indians without a pony? A pony was a cowboy’s best friend. He needed a pony.
