Candy’s Dilemma

The sun was shining through the small bedroom window as the smell of bacon flowed from the kitchen. A quiet but harsh voice came from in front of the bedroom door, “Get up Candy, it is time to eat.” Candy placed her swollen feet on the floor and began to walk toward the bathroom. She took care of her business and makes her way to the breakfast table. “Candy what are you going to do? We must know who the father of your baby is; you are walking around here big as a tick and eating up everything in sight. It is not fair to me, the other children or Jack.” Candy looked at her mother as if she wanted to cry, “I can drop out of school and get a job,” replied Candy. “Who in their right mind is going to hire an eight months pregnant girl? You have not been doing your fair share of work around here. I just don’t know what we are going to do,” said Candy’s mother.

Kids were staring and snickering at Candy as she walked to her first period class. She clutched her books tightly and proceeded down the hall. Candy’s English teacher Mrs. Smith had taken an interest in her. After class was over Mrs. Smith approached Candy. “Have you thought about our conversation?” “Yes, I have Mrs. Smith but I don’t know what my mother will say.” Well, if you would like Candy my husband and I could come over tonight and speak with your mother.” No! Mrs. Smith not tonight, please let me mention it to my mother first.” Candy told Mrs. Smith goodbye and began to walk to her next class.

When Candy went home that afternoon she waited patiently for her mother to arrive. Her mother came in exhausted from cleaning houses all day. “Candy is dinner ready?” “Yes, Mama it is.” Have the other children eaten?” “Yes, Mama they have.” “Where is Jack?” asked Candy’s mother. “He is drunk in the bedroom,” replied Candy. “I know you do not like Jack, but he is good to me and he helps keep food on the table.” “Mama, I really do not want to talk about Jack. I need to talk with you.” Girl can I get in the house good and get me something to eat?”

After her mother finished her meal, Candy cleared the table. “Come and sit down and talk to me. What is troubling you girl?” “Mama, Mrs. Smith wants to come by and talk with you.” “What would she like to speak with me about?” She and her husband can’t have children and they want to adopt my baby.” “Well, we certainly can’t afford to feed another mouth around here and you still will not tell who the father of the baby is, but at the same time it is hard to give up a baby after carrying a human life for nine months. Well, Candy you got yourself into this mess so I will let you figure it out. When is she coming?” asked Candy’s mother. “It will probably be tomorrow night,” said Candy.

Candy passed by Carl in the hallway. “Hi Carl, how are you doing?” “I’m doing well Candy. Have you told your mother yet?” asked Carl. “Told her what?” asked Candy. “Candy you know what I’m talking about, have you told your mother who the father of your baby is?” asked Carl. “No, Carl I have not,” replied Candy with a growl in her voice. Carl shook his head and walked in the opposite direction.
