The Diablo Ouija | by Sophie Duncan Oct. 31, 2011 | Free! | 11573 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: I also write with my sister under Tasha-and-Sophie Duncan, and for some of my adult fiction as A D Benedict. By day I am a project manager developing IT solutions for a large company in the South East of England. By night, you'll find me scribbling away at many a story that just won't leave me alone. I've been writing since I was a wee thing, and publishing since I discovered the internet in 1994 or so. So what do I write? Contemporary and urban fantasy have mainly been my playground, but I have done some real world settings as well. I do like mystery and have been reading (and watching) Agatha Christie since I was a child. I've also been known to do a bit of poetry. Style: I have been told I do angst well, so if you want your heartstrings twanged, or your tummy to tie in knots until the end, then I'm your gal. I am, however, a happy ending junkie, although I do throw a hint of realism in there sometimes as well. I like a few twists and turns on the way in some of my plots, although I have written my share of PWPs as well. I have to admit a small obsession with eyes: I believe they are the seat of beauty in a person, so I play with them in creature fic and use them for expression in others - personal hang up, sorry. Also, I have never met a cliché I didn't like and I am a firm believer that cliché is fine if you do it right. Writing is a passion and there's nothing better than writing for an audience. Any writer who says they don't care about feedback must have had an ego amputation :) If you life my scribbles, I'd be very glad to hear from you. |

Ethereal | by J. Leigh Bralick Nov. 03, 2011 | Free! | 6014 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: J. Leigh writes primarily fantasy and YA fantasy novels. She has made one foray into science fiction, and enjoyed it so much she may eventually publish that experiment, if she survives the effort. Her favorite thing about writing fantasy is the excitement of exploring new worlds and experiencing exciting adventures — all on a very low-cost budget! All you really need is coffee. Low cost + coffee = success for a perpetual student like J. Leigh, who may have heard of the concept of a full-time job but likes to avoid that topic as much as possible. When she isn’t writing, J. Leigh enjoys fencing, listening to music of a variety of genres, costuming, and inventing languages for her worlds. That last bit is a secret, so don’t tell. She may even put up some information on her blog about her different languages at some time, if she can be persuaded to. Besides work, J. Leigh also doesn’t believe in ages. So don’t ask her how old she is. She is either eighteen or eighty-five, or somewhere in the middle. |

James Dean Is Jimmy | by Ben Campbell March 19, 2012 | Free! | 3795 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: What renders humanity great is the never ending sense of possibilities, and the unlimited sense of survival. Upon my first excursion to Europe I told myself not to fear the unexpected or I'd be locked in time, so, I'd discovered a balance that separated the empty space of insanity and the wasted time of sanity. My only possessions were time and imagination after I'd found that balance, and now I own the ever expansive sense of possibilities and the thrilling balance of survival. :) Citizens in villages and towns and cities in 15 European countries welcomed me as one of their own. I'd met hundreds of motivated individuals while traveling. Folks that were contagion and svelte, everyday people that were recklessly engaging and wildly dramatic interested me. One day I'd include many of my new friends in my stories. After extensive travels, I've been busy writing tough reality-fiction splashed with urban, ubiquitous, multi-layered adventures, all the while developing plots and characters that have guts and stamina, witticisms and strengths, conviction and unquenchable passion to live exciting as well as productive lives. My novels singe with investigative reporting, strident photography and sharp realism. My Monterey, California dig is where I've authored six adventure novels. I'm currently researching and writing two more novels with locations in Washington DC and San Francisco, where lines between reality & fiction are seamless. I'm also penning an erotica story as a sideline. Please enjoy reading all my novels. Give them to friends and relatives as everyday gifts. Thank you for visiting my smashwords.com site and pass on this information. All six novels are available as eBooks here for $2.99 or less, and all six are optioned as paperback edition through amazon.com |

Riverlilly | by J. Evans June 14, 2011 | Free! | 83064 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: Thanks for checking out my work. Clearly you are an individual of excellent taste and breeding, possibly very attractive. My lifelong mission is to become the Greatest Fantasy Author Since Tolkien (or Lewis, on Sundays.) Fingers crossed, I intend to write and illustrate a new book each year until I get arthritis. My first book, Riverlilly, is the story of a boy and girl lost at sea in a world where nothing makes sense. Imagine Prince Caspian meets the Phantom Tollbooth, then mix in some Life of Pi. Riverlilly is nothing like that. Imagine it better! I tried to write a book that I would love to read. For me, that means a lot of head-scratching puzzles that you don't even realize are riddles at first, a lot of humor and a lot of heart, maybe a little smooching, characters and places I have never read about which nonetheless feel like I have been reading about them all my life, a twist like a whirlpool stuck inside an hourglass, and magic that is at once subtle and overwhelming. I am not saying I accomplished any of this. It's just some crap to think about. Riverlilly has deep roots in fairy tales and fables, but the truly old-fashioned stuff takes place below the surface. Adrift in their boat, Jai and Ceder meet no elves or dwarves or knights or princesses. They do, however, befriend a fisherman who has never caught a fish, and he more than makes up for any omissions of the standard fare. The absence of orcs and magic wands notwithstanding, there are many *winks* to the genre masters in Riverlilly, as well as plays on classical philosophy and parallels to modern science, often tucked between the same lines. Like all good legends, this is a story that never ends. Still reading? Give your poor eyes a break and check out the full front/spine/back cover art here... http://dl.dropbox.com/u/55597115/Book%20Cover%20Final%201.TIF I am thrilled this story is ready to share. Please pass it along if you like it. (Trade paperbacks are available upon request--they are the most beautiful books in the world.) (Also, available soon at Podiobooks.com) My second book, Pence, is a dark story ultimately, although it is for kids and kids-at-heart. Half-fable, half-fantasy, half-tragedy, half-comedy, approximately. Pence is a small boy carved out of a potato with all the wrong proportions of courage and common sense, a head that is a mite on the fat side and a mouth too big for any respectable vegetable. Pence is a laugh-out-loud funny book. The story is non-linear, the three Acts all have their own pace and personality, but Pence himself ties everything together, if only because he never shuts up. Um, in a good way. Check out each book page below for more mind-altering details. (There is additional art for Pence and other works-in-progress on my facebook page--the link is around here somewhere.) If you like Riverlilly or Pence, please leave a review. Tell a friend. Write your congressman. Get a face tattoo. Do it. J. Evans |

Fixing Broken Promises | by Nobo13 April 15, 2012 | Free! | 4397 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: Hi, I'm Nobo13, a writer, artist and publisher rolled into one. The pen name Nobo13 comes from my surname. It reads like the Japanese for climb 'noboru' but it has an extra bit that resembles the number 13- hence we have Nobo13. Additional the part that is 'noboru' is read as 'to publish' in Chinese, so it made sense for me to use it as a self-published author. Other than writing or doodling away, I've found myself strumming away at ukuleles- I highly recommend getting an uke. It's something that brings a smile to a face quite easily, and is itself very pleasing. Please check out my website, it has a lot of features and fun. |

8810 | by Nicholas Taylor April 08, 2010 | Free! | 32202 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: Hi, I’m Nick Taylor, I was born and raised in Denver, Colorado, possibly the greatest place on earth. I went to Dakota Ridge High and was in band— that’s right I was a band nerd and no, I don’t have any cool “one time at band camp†stories, so don’t ask. I started writing in October of 2007. I was driving around with a friend and said “hey, I wonder if I can write a book.†So I thought I’d try and write outline and see what happens. Well, I finished the outline and I couldn’t just stop there. I needed to write chapter one and then that would be it. Do you see where this is going? Anyway, after chapter one was done, I had to finish the first book. But I wanted to get input as I went in order to write a better story. I decided to do a podcast of the first three chapters to see what people thought. After the first podcast, I decided that I wanted to continue to do it and more over, I wanted to get a larger listener base. It's all been a wonderful journey from there. |

And yet I don't even know if I have the right to criticise, having never been a political activist myself. *** BOOKS ON OFFER FREE VISIT MY WEB SITE *** |

About The Society On Da Run series: Earth has seen many visitors, from space dragons colonizing the planet in Pre Cambrian times to intelligent insectoids and benevolent owl gods. Follow the adventures of a wide cast of characters as they encounter the dragons of the Draconizica empire, and Ashuton Karrucci, the god of dragons going about his daily life in Italy. From a story about a small town ravaged by an airborn dragon virus, to a story about a cruel dragon king on a terraformed Mars, to the story of a girl pregnant with a Dragon god, these stories are not bound by the norms of the Fantasy and Science Fiction genres. Also includes stories unrelated to the dragons. _______________________________________________ As of March 2012, all issues in the TSODR have been (or are being) updated with new covers and additional content.
