Steven Travers has always been entrepreneurial. “I was turned down by my high school newspaper because they didn’t allow freshmen,” says the sixth-generation Californian, “so I started my own!” Aside from journalism, Travers was a star pitcher, playing three years of varsity baseball for the same suburban California high school that USC football coach Pete Carroll graduated from years earlier. Travers helped lead his team to the mythical national championship of high school baseball, according to polls conducted by Collegiate Baseball magazine and the Easton Bat Company. Travers attended college on a baseball scholarship, where he was an all-conference pitcher, and played collegiate summer ball in Colorado, Nevada and Canada. The 6-6, 225-pound Travers played professionally for the St. Louis Cardinals' organization, where he was a teammate of Danny Cox. Travers once struck out 1989 National League Most Valuable Player Kevin Mitchell three times in one game (he K’d 14 that night). In the Oakland Athletics' system, he played alongside Jose Canseco. “Punching out K-Mitchell was great,” he recalls, “but the highlight of my career may have been when I was with the A’s against the Giants in a Major League exhibition game at Phoenix Municipal Stadium. I struck out the side and went nine-up, nine-down in three innings. Bill King and Lon Simmons announced it on the radio.” Steve later coached at USC, Cal-Berkeley and was recruited to manage a team in Berlin, Germany. After pro baseball, Travers returned to college. He studied in the University of Southern California School of Cinema-Television, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications. At USC, he was a classmate of Mark McGwire and Randy Johnson. After graduation, he traveled extensively to New York City, Washington, D.C. and to Europe: London and Paris. “I almost went to work for Dean Witter in the World Trade Center,” he recalled. “After 9/11 I really started to think about ‘what might have been.’ ” Travers also went to Western State University College of Law, the Hollywood Film Institute, and was part of the UCLA Writers' Program. He served in the U.S. Army during the Persian Gulf War, and was a political consultant, speechwriter and campaign manager for a California Congressional candidate. Travers was also a sports agent, co-founding San Francisco Sports Management, Inc. The agency represented Pittsburgh Pirate outfielder Al Martin. Another client, ex-Angels' playboy pitcher Bo Belinsky, was at that time being approached by Hollywood producers about a movie depicting his tempestuous life. Travers wrote the screenplay. That script, Once He Was An Angel, was a quarterfinalist in the Quantum Leap screenwriting contest before getting optioned by a Hollywood producing group that included Frank Capra Jr. and Frank Capra III (son and grandson of the famed It's A Wonderful Life director). Thus began Travers' embarkation into a full-time professional writing career in 1994. “I’ve punched a lot of tickets,” Travers says of his background, “and I bring real-world experience to my writing.” A veteran of Hollywood, Steve has written 15 screenplays, teleplays and stageplays. His credits include The Lost Battalion (the true story of a World War I unit during the Argonne Offensive, the subject of a film starring Rick Schroder), Wicked and Baja California. His additional writing awards are for Bandit, an America’s Best quarterfinalist, and Rock 'n' Roll Heaven, a Writers Network Screenplay & Fiction quarterfinalist. He appeared in the film The Californians, starring Noah Wylie and Illeana Douglas. Travers worked closely with legendary Hollywood producer Edgar Scherick, the original producer of The Lost Battalion. Scherick started ABC’s Baseball Game of the Week and Monday Night Football with Roone Arledge. Travers also wrote for the Los Angeles Times, the Los Angeles Daily News, and was a sports stringer on San Diego’s XTRA 690 AM radio station. Steve has freelanced for magazines, newspapers and web sites. He produced Steven Travers’ Journal on the Internet. Eventually, Travers became the number one columnist at StreetZebra, an L.A. sports magazine where he covered the USC beat and wrote a monthly "Distant Replay" of great events in the Southland's rich sports history. “I have encyclopedic knowledge of history,” Steve says. “I am truly versatile as a writer, able to use my knowledge of the past to understand the present. I have also survived as a freelancer; written extensively for the Internet and the so-called New Media; and have up-close knowledge of the ‘dot-bomb’ era that was the 1990s.” In 2001, Travers was hired as the lead sports columnist for the San Francisco Examiner. While writing for the Examiner, Travers was an eyewitness to Barry Bonds' historic 73-home run season of 2001. He got Bonds to agree to authorize the writing of his autobiography, but a business deal with the publishers was not worked out. Eventually, by 2002 Travers wrote the Best Seller Barry Bonds: Baseball’s Superman from Sports Publishing L.L.C. (www.sportspublishingllc.com). Actor Charlie Sheen wrote the foreword. It has gone through multiple re-prints, is now in paperback, and was nominated for a Casey Award for Best Baseball Book of the Year. A sequel, covering Bonds' alleged steroid use, additional MVP awards, and chase of Hank Aaron's career home run record, is in the works. In 2004, Travers wrote a proposal for the book that eventually became Game of Shadows by Mark Fainaru-Wada and Lance Williams, who landed the deal he did not. An avid reader, Travers poured through books, at least one a month; classics, biographies, history, sports, novels, philosophy. He was also a Christian, but had never read The Holy Bible. "Sometime around March or April of 2004, I decided to read The Bible," he says. "Two pages a day. I started out with the New Testament. After a while I began to read out loud, which made a difference. Then the Old Testament. It took a little less than a year to read the entire book. As soon as I read it through, I started again. Two pages per day, out loud. At this point I have read it twice through. I am beginning to understand it. I am not an expert on it, but the Holy Spirit has come to me and inspires me each day that I read God’s Word. I will read that book until the day I die, God willing and I am able, until some day I will have read it so many times I will be an expert. . .” In 2006, Taylor Trade, a division of Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, Inc. (www.RLPGTrade.com), published his book The USC Trojans: College Football's All-Time Greatest Dynasty, which argues that the University of Southern California has replaced Notre Dame as collegiate football's greatest tradition. USC legend Charles "Tree" Young graciously wrote the foreword, and the book ascended to Amazon.com “top seller” and National Book Network “top 100 seller” status. It was re-released in paperback in 2010. Taylor Trade released One Night, Two Teams: Alabama vs. USC and the Game That Changed A Nation in 2007 (foreword by Forrest Gump author Winston Groom). It was re-released in paperback in 2010. This is the true story of how the 1970 USC-Alabama football game ushered in desegregation of the American South. A film is in development. USC graduate Kerry McCluggage, a top Hollywood producer (Craftsman Films); former president of Universal and Paramount TV divisions; founder of UPN; with credits that include Star Trek, Star Trek: The Next Generation and Miami Vice, has optioned it with plans for a major theatrical release. The co-producer is Barry Kemp (Coach, Patch Adams, Catch Me If You Can). Potential directors include Taylor Hackford (An Officer and a Gentleman, Delores Claiborne, The Devil’s Advocate) and Kevin Costner (Dances With Wolves), with Costner possibly starring as John McKay, Tommy Lee Jones as Bear Bryant. Travers is a member of a “producer team” that includes Trojan football legend Anthony Davis and USC graduate Jim Starr. Steve is the scion of a distinguished California family. The Travers’s came to colonial America, fought in the Revolutionary War, and settled into New York and Massachusetts. They founded the Travers Stakes horse race. One ancestor, a Captain Edgerly of the Union Army, was reputed to be President Abraham Lincoln’s “personal spy” during the Civil War. Steve’s side of the family came West during the time of the 1849 Gold Rush. His grandfather, Charles S. Travers, covered the 1906 Great Earthquake as a journalist, started a silent film magazine in Hollywood, and was President of the San Francisco Press Club. Steve’s great-uncle, Reginald Travers, was a noted Shakespearean actor. His father, Donald Travers, is a retired attorney and track coach who served as a Naval officer during World War II. His mother, Inge Travers, is a renowned artist. Steve’s brother, Donald Travers II, is a former Naval officer. Daughter Elizabeth Travers is a college student. Inside Berkeley’s Memorial Stadium is the Colonel Charles Travers Big Game Room (named after Steve’s late uncle, who served during World War II) to accommodate press conferences, and (named after Steve’s late aunt) is the Louise Travers Memorial Club Room. Steven Travers has always been entrepreneurial. “I was turned down by my high school newspaper because they didn’t allow freshmen,” says the sixth-generation Californian, “so I started my own!” Aside from journalism, Travers was a star pitcher, playing three years of varsity baseball for the same suburban California high school that USC football coach Pete Carroll graduated from years earlier. Travers helped lead his team to the mythical national championship of high school baseball, according to polls conducted by Collegiate Baseball magazine and the Easton Bat Company. Travers attended college on a baseball scholarship, where he was an all-conference pitcher, and played collegiate summer ball in Colorado, Nevada and Canada. The 6-6, 225-pound Travers played professionally for the St. Louis Cardinals' organization, where he was a teammate of Danny Cox. Travers once struck out 1989 National League Most Valuable Player Kevin Mitchell three times in one game (he K’d 14 that night). In the Oakland Athletics' system, he played alongside Jose Canseco. “Punching out K-Mitchell was great,” he recalls, “but the highlight of my career may have been when I was with the A’s against the Giants in a Major League exhibition game at Phoenix Municipal Stadium. I struck out the side and went nine-up, nine-down in three innings. Bill King and Lon Simmons announced it on the radio.” Steve later coached at USC, Cal-Berkeley and was recruited to manage a team in Berlin, Germany. After pro baseball, Travers returned to college. He studied in the University of Southern California School of Cinema-Television, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications. At USC, he was a classmate of Mark McGwire and Randy Johnson. After graduation, he traveled extensively to New York City, Washington, D.C. and to Europe: London and Paris. “I almost went to work for Dean Witter in the World Trade Center,” he recalled. “After 9/11 I really started to think about ‘what might have been.’ ” Travers also went to Western State University College of Law, the Hollywood Film Institute, and was part of the UCLA Writers' Program. He served in the U.S. Army during the Persian Gulf War, and was a political consultant, speechwriter and campaign manager for a California Congressional candidate. Travers was also a sports agent, co-founding San Francisco Sports Management, Inc. The agency represented Pittsburgh Pirate outfielder Al Martin. Another client, ex-Angels' playboy pitcher Bo Belinsky, was at that time being approached by Hollywood producers about a movie depicting his tempestuous life. Travers wrote the screenplay. That script, Once He Was An Angel, was a quarterfinalist in the Quantum Leap screenwriting contest before getting optioned by a Hollywood producing group that included Frank Capra Jr. and Frank Capra III (son and grandson of the famed It's A Wonderful Life director). Thus began Travers' embarkation into a full-time professional writing career in 1994. “I’ve punched a lot of tickets,” Travers says of his background, “and I bring real-world experience to my writing.” A veteran of Hollywood, Steve has written 15 screenplays, teleplays and stageplays. His credits include The Lost Battalion (the true story of a World War I unit during the Argonne Offensive, the subject of a film starring Rick Schroder), Wicked and Baja California. His additional writing awards are for Bandit, an America’s Best quarterfinalist, and Rock 'n' Roll Heaven, a Writers Network Screenplay & Fiction quarterfinalist. He appeared in the film The Californians, starring Noah Wylie and Illeana Douglas. Travers worked closely with legendary Hollywood producer Edgar Scherick, the original producer of The Lost Battalion. Scherick started ABC’s Baseball Game of the Week and Monday Night Football with Roone Arledge. Travers also wrote for the Los Angeles Times, the Los Angeles Daily News, and was a sports stringer on San Diego’s XTRA 690 AM radio station. Steve has freelanced for magazines, newspapers and web sites. He produced Steven Travers’ Journal on the Internet. Eventually, Travers became the number one columnist at StreetZebra, an L.A. sports magazine where he covered the USC beat and wrote a monthly "Distant Replay" of great events in the Southland's rich sports history. “I have encyclopedic knowledge of history,” Steve says. “I am truly versatile as a writer, able to use my knowledge of the past to understand the present. I have also survived as a freelancer; written extensively for the Internet and the so-called New Media; and have up-close knowledge of the ‘dot-bomb’ era that was the 1990s.” In 2001, Travers was hired as the lead sports columnist for the San Francisco Examiner. While writing for the Examiner, Travers was an eyewitness to Barry Bonds' historic 73-home run season of 2001. He got Bonds to agree to authorize the writing of his autobiography, but a business deal with the publishers was not worked out. Eventually, by 2002 Travers wrote the Best Seller Barry Bonds: Baseball’s Superman from Sports Publishing L.L.C. (www.sportspublishingllc.com). Actor Charlie Sheen wrote the foreword. It has gone through multiple re-prints, is now in paperback, and was nominated for a Casey Award for Best Baseball Book of the Year. A sequel, covering Bonds' alleged steroid use, additional MVP awards, and chase of Hank Aaron's career home run record, is in the works. In 2004, Travers wrote a proposal for the book that eventually became Game of Shadows by Mark Fainaru-Wada and Lance Williams, who landed the deal he did not. An avid reader, Travers poured through books, at least one a month; classics, biographies, history, sports, novels, philosophy. He was also a Christian, but had never read The Holy Bible. "Sometime around March or April of 2004, I decided to read The Bible," he says. "Two pages a day. I started out with the New Testament. After a while I began to read out loud, which made a difference. Then the Old Testament. It took a little less than a year to read the entire book. As soon as I read it through, I started again. Two pages per day, out loud. At this point I have read it twice through. I am beginning to understand it. I am not an expert on it, but the Holy Spirit has come to me and inspires me each day that I read God’s Word. I will read that book until the day I die, God willing and I am able, until some day I will have read it so many times I will be an expert. . .” In 2006, Taylor Trade, a division of Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, Inc. (www.RLPGTrade.com), published his book The USC Trojans: College Football's All-Time Greatest Dynasty, which argues that the University of Southern California has replaced Notre Dame as collegiate football's greatest tradition. No biography. I'll write memoirs when I'm 103 and anyone I mention will be so happy to be alive to read them they won't sue. I write science fiction female fantasies for fast-reading smart women. What they wish fan fiction could be and know it can't. It's what I was asked to write at Mediawest in '92, when I won two Fan-Q's for my first two stories. Why me? They said "You can do it." What's that mean? It's not just storytelling talent. That's rather common. It was a real survival trait. Every good storyteller taught about the world and passed knowledge. That's what I do and like the talespinners of old, I do it in a fun way. Still not enough? My university transcript looks like I began with a map of the campus and checked off buildings I'd explored well. I admit I didn't spend a lot of time in biology and horticulture, but I did a thorough exploration of the other 'ologies, economics, engineering, philosophy, music, theater, computer science, communications and, of course, language and literature. It does show. The cultures I build and the relationships of the characters don't have any missing pieces. Some are very sexy. Some aren't. I write for an under-served market. Will others like my work? Yes, but they aren't really wishing for something that's not available. Or not this something. There really isn't anything else like my work out there. If there had been, I'd have found it. I want action-adventure that never slows down and engages me intellectually too. I want superheroes who are eloquent and brilliant. I want characters who sound like they've got an education and wisdom from 'immortals,' who aren't cases of arrested development that haven't learned anything since they were 20. I want books I have to read more than once to get everything in them out of them. I want societies that don't have any missing pieces. Traders who think about profit margin, and guard captains who think about needing to use the toilet and wish the dignitaries would, please, go into the meeting room. To get it, I had to write it. The style is for my target market too. It takes a couple chapters to get used to it, but once the women I write for do, they will read it faster. I'm a torchbearer, a member of the avant-garde, as we escape the economic confinement of physical mass distribution. You still hear people say, "If it was any good, it would be REALLY published." No, only books which the corporation decides will appeal to a vast audience get published and the people who make that decision haven't read them. A decision of that financial magnitude requires spreadsheets. They can't invest stockholder money in anything that isn't blockbuster-connected and probable sell-through, nothing truly new or different. Born in a small German village east of Cologne, Germany, Lothar E. Meinerzhagen after finishing school, expressed his desire to work in journalism. First step was the Deutsche Journalistenschule (German School of Journalism) in Munich, followed by an apprenticeship at the highly respected Munich newspaper Münchner Merkur under the leadership of famous anchorman Franz Wördemann. But he then realized that the next few decades were to be in the music industry where he managed to become an executive for EMI Music. He worked for the company in Cologne, London, Los Angeles and Berlin, working with acts such as The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Queen, Little Steven and David Bowie amongst many. In 2002 he decided to call it quits pursuing other interests. All his life he was interested in military history and developed an enormous know-how which enabled him to act as a battlefield guide to friends and business colleagues alike. He now set up his vision of a battlefield travel company that took numerous military buffs to the beaches of Normandy, Peenemünde, Berlin, the Western Front of WWI, Crimea, Stalingrad (Volgograd) and Monte Cassino in Italy just to name a few destinations. In these years he developed the idea to “Götterdämmerung” and other stories related to WWI and WWII. His enormous knowledge of these events, his highly skilled technique of using even the smallest and hardly known historic detail makes his novels so entertaining. Though Lothar Meinerzhagen enjoyed a classical education he is certainly not in favour of so called political correct books and other publications. Anais Nin (1903-1977) was born in Neuilly-Sur-Seine, near Paris, and was the daughter of a renowned pianist and composer, Joaquin Nin. Abandoned by her father in 1913, she and her family traveled to New York, where she began her now famous diary, comprised of some 35,000 pages over a period of six decades. When the first volume of 'The Diary of Anais Nin' was published in 1966, it began Nin's meteoric surge to fame. However, often overlooked are the works of fiction she created, beginning with 'The House of Incest' in 1936, which was followed by a then-banned edition of a collection of novellas under the title 'The Winter of Artifice.' This original edition has been republished for the first time in 2007. Perhaps Nin's most acclaimed fiction is the series of short stories in 'Under a Glass Bell,' which she self-published in New York during the 1940s when no commercial publisher would take the risk. She then began a series of novels that were interconnected and finally collected into one volume entitled 'Cities of the Interior.' Her final novel was 'Collages,' about which Henry Miller said, "Even the finest collages fall apart with time; these will not." Anais Nin was one of the 20th century's most innovative and compelling artist, and now her works are finally appearing in digital format.

No biography. I'll write memoirs when I'm 103 and anyone I mention will be so happy to be alive to read them they won't sue. I write science fiction female fantasies for fast-reading smart women. What they wish fan fiction could be and know it can't. It's what I was asked to write at Mediawest in '92, when I won two Fan-Q's for my first two stories. Why me? They said "You can do it." What's that mean? It's not just storytelling talent. That's rather common. It was a real survival trait. Every good storyteller taught about the world and passed knowledge. That's what I do and like the talespinners of old, I do it in a fun way. Still not enough? My university transcript looks like I began with a map of the campus and checked off buildings I'd explored well. I admit I didn't spend a lot of time in biology and horticulture, but I did a thorough exploration of the other 'ologies, economics, engineering, philosophy, music, theater, computer science, communications and, of course, language and literature. It does show. The cultures I build and the relationships of the characters don't have any missing pieces. Some are very sexy. Some aren't. I write for an under-served market. Will others like my work? Yes, but they aren't really wishing for something that's not available. Or not this something. There really isn't anything else like my work out there. If there had been, I'd have found it. I want action-adventure that never slows down and engages me intellectually too. I want superheroes who are eloquent and brilliant. I want characters who sound like they've got an education and wisdom from 'immortals,' who aren't cases of arrested development that haven't learned anything since they were 20. I want books I have to read more than once to get everything in them out of them. I want societies that don't have any missing pieces. Traders who think about profit margin, and guard captains who think about needing to use the toilet and wish the dignitaries would, please, go into the meeting room. To get it, I had to write it. The style is for my target market too. It takes a couple chapters to get used to it, but once the women I write for do, they will read it faster. I'm a torchbearer, a member of the avant-garde, as we escape the economic confinement of physical mass distribution. You still hear people say, "If it was any good, it would be REALLY published." No, only books which the corporation decides will appeal to a vast audience get published and the people who make that decision haven't read them. A decision of that financial magnitude requires spreadsheets. They can't invest stockholder money in anything that isn't blockbuster-connected and probable sell-through, nothing truly new or different. Chris Dortch estimates he’s covered close to 1,500 college basketball games since he was sports editor of his college student newspaper back in the late ’70s. “And it never gets old,” he says. “I always get pumped up to watch college hoops.” Dortch came to love basketball growing up in the basketball crazy state of Illinois, watching Missouri Valley Conference and Big Ten games every Saturday and pouring over the sports section of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “I think I learned how to read a box score before I learned how to read,” he says. I grew up in a distant, hilly suburb of Los Angeles. I am the oldest in a family of four children: my fathr was a research biologist and my mother is an artist in stained glass. I went and recklessly got a relatively useless degree in English Literature (California State University Northridge, 1976) and then enlisted in the US Air Force. I trained and served as a radio and television broadcast specialist, in places as various as Greece, Spain, Japan, Korea, Greenland and Ogden, Utah. This involved an assortment of interesting duties, which included midnight alt-rock DJ, TV news anchor, video-production librarian, radio and television writer and producer, production manager, and tour guide. In 1985, I drove a bright orange Volvo sedan from Athens to Zaragoza, Spain, accompanied only by a small and cranky child. I retired from the Air Force in 1997. In late 2002, I became a regular contributor to the military-oriented weblog, got hooked on writing historical fiction, bringing out "To Truckee's Trail" in 2006; that's the story of the first ever wagon-train party to bring wagons over the Sierra Nevada, which marked the opening of the California Trail. Besides historical novels, I review books and movies for Blogger News Network, am also on the board of the Independent Authors Guild, a non-profit association of writers published by small and regional publishers ... and I manage their website, also. I currently live in San Antonio with my daughter and an assortment of dogs and cats, and travel within Texas doing lectures and talks about my follow-up novel series, the Adelsverein Trilogy.

I began writing stories roughly thirteen years ago, after pursuing a career as a singer/songwriter in Denver and later in Nashville. My writing career could’ve been a brief one, as it started one night when it was my turn to read a bedtime story to my two young sons. Rather than read the ‘Mouse birthday book’ for the umpteenth time, I began a ramble about a mystical world parallel to our own, a world where sinister creatures sought to take a little boy into their hidden lair…forever. My first critical reviews from my young audience were mixed. My youngest child, Tyler, was enthralled about the magical place I created, and eagerly awaited more. However, my oldest, Christopher, thought it was the dumbest tale he had ever heard! Luckily, my wife, Fiona, listened nearby. She thought the idea had potential, though she kept that fact a secret until the following spring, 1997. When she suggested I create a fuller blown version of this story, it marked the beginning of my love affair with writing stories. I wish I could tell you that the experience has always been a glorious progression, where crafting characters, believable landscapes with captivating plots, and surprising twists was easy. Far from it. It took nearly three years for me to complete my first novel--based on the bedtime story to my boys who by then were young teenagers—and another two years to decide if I liked it enough to show it to anyone else. Signed to a small independent publisher in 2004, “The Forgotten Eden” enjoyed a brief run and received some acclaim upon its release in 2006. While pursuing a book deal for my paranormal adventure series, The Talisman Chronicles, of which “The Forgotten Eden” and “The Devil’s Paradise” are the first two of five installments, an itch to dabble in something a little different hit me. A ghost story, and one dealing with a murdered teenage girl who waited nearly a century to enact her revenge became my next creation. Completed in 2007, “Cades Cove” was my second release on Kindle, available in August. The sequel to this ghost story soon followed in September, entitled “The Raven Mocker”. “Deadly Night” was my very first Kindle release, in July, and is one of my latest books. Based on a fictional exaggeration of me and Fiona, “Deadly Night” is a mixture of ‘now’ and where we were 20 years ago as ghost hunters (and in my hard-hitting’ days as a Nashville rock n’ roller). “The Vampires’ Last Lover” is my latest release. One that pushed the personal envelope for me, the story was written from a female perspective. Like Stephen King, when he wrote “Carrie” so many years ago, my wife provided precious insights into how women view the world around them, and in particular, their true perspectives on males—something I’m sure would surprise most of us guys. Anyway, as the first installment for my new “The Dying of the Dark” series, the story brings a fresh perspective to the vampire genre, focused on what it means to be unique and alone, both for the living and the undead, and how self sacrifice for the good of others remains the most noble aspiration for all creatures—above and below our beloved earth. So what’s next? Three more Talisman Chronicle books will eventually happen, along with spin-off novellas and one last full novel to complete the “Cades Cove Series”. Also, the sequel to “Deadly Night” beckons to be written (“The Ungrateful Dead). Yet, these projects will have to wait a little while, due to a brand new series that I am co-writing with the highly successful J.R. Rain. The focus of our collaboration is Judas Iscariot and his quest for forgiveness, and release from the bonds of immortality. The first book , “Plague of Coins”, should be available in early spring next year (2011). After that, who knows? Something dark and creepy… Or, perhaps something light and fun? Just wait n’ see! Steven Travers has always been entrepreneurial. “I was turned down by my high school newspaper because they didn’t allow freshmen,” says the sixth-generation Californian, “so I started my own!” Aside from journalism, Travers was a star pitcher, playing three years of varsity baseball for the same suburban California high school that USC football coach Pete Carroll graduated from years earlier. Travers helped lead his team to the mythical national championship of high school baseball, according to polls conducted by Collegiate Baseball magazine and the Easton Bat Company. Travers attended college on a baseball scholarship, where he was an all-conference pitcher, and played collegiate summer ball in Colorado, Nevada and Canada. The 6-6, 225-pound Travers played professionally for the St. Louis Cardinals' organization, where he was a teammate of Danny Cox. Travers once struck out 1989 National League Most Valuable Player Kevin Mitchell three times in one game (he K’d 14 that night). In the Oakland Athletics' system, he played alongside Jose Canseco. “Punching out K-Mitchell was great,” he recalls, “but the highlight of my career may have been when I was with the A’s against the Giants in a Major League exhibition game at Phoenix Municipal Stadium. I struck out the side and went nine-up, nine-down in three innings. Bill King and Lon Simmons announced it on the radio.” Steve later coached at USC, Cal-Berkeley and was recruited to manage a team in Berlin, Germany. After pro baseball, Travers returned to college. He studied in the University of Southern California School of Cinema-Television, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications. At USC, he was a classmate of Mark McGwire and Randy Johnson. After graduation, he traveled extensively to New York City, Washington, D.C. and to Europe: London and Paris. “I almost went to work for Dean Witter in the World Trade Center,” he recalled. “After 9/11 I really started to think about ‘what might have been.’ ” Travers also went to Western State University College of Law, the Hollywood Film Institute, and was part of the UCLA Writers' Program. He served in the U.S. Army during the Persian Gulf War, and was a political consultant, speechwriter and campaign manager for a California Congressional candidate. Travers was also a sports agent, co-founding San Francisco Sports Management, Inc. The agency represented Pittsburgh Pirate outfielder Al Martin. Another client, ex-Angels' playboy pitcher Bo Belinsky, was at that time being approached by Hollywood producers about a movie depicting his tempestuous life. Travers wrote the screenplay. That script, Once He Was An Angel, was a quarterfinalist in the Quantum Leap screenwriting contest before getting optioned by a Hollywood producing group that included Frank Capra Jr. and Frank Capra III (son and grandson of the famed It's A Wonderful Life director). Thus began Travers' embarkation into a full-time professional writing career in 1994. “I’ve punched a lot of tickets,” Travers says of his background, “and I bring real-world experience to my writing.” A veteran of Hollywood, Steve has written 15 screenplays, teleplays and stageplays. His credits include The Lost Battalion (the true story of a World War I unit during the Argonne Offensive, the subject of a film starring Rick Schroder), Wicked and Baja California. His additional writing awards are for Bandit, an America’s Best quarterfinalist, and Rock 'n' Roll Heaven, a Writers Network Screenplay & Fiction quarterfinalist. He appeared in the film The Californians, starring Noah Wylie and Illeana Douglas. Travers worked closely with legendary Hollywood producer Edgar Scherick, the original producer of The Lost Battalion. Scherick started ABC’s Baseball Game of the Week and Monday Night Football with Roone Arledge. Travers also wrote for the Los Angeles Times, the Los Angeles Daily News, and was a sports stringer on San Diego’s XTRA 690 AM radio station. Steve has freelanced for magazines, newspapers and web sites. He produced Steven Travers’ Journal on the Internet. Eventually, Travers became the number one columnist at StreetZebra, an L.A. sports magazine where he covered the USC beat and wrote a monthly "Distant Replay" of great events in the Southland's rich sports history. “I have encyclopedic knowledge of history,” Steve says. “I am truly versatile as a writer, able to use my knowledge of the past to understand the present. I have also survived as a freelancer; written extensively for the Internet and the so-called New Media; and have up-close knowledge of the ‘dot-bomb’ era that was the 1990s.” In 2001, Travers was hired as the lead sports columnist for the San Francisco Examiner. While writing for the Examiner, Travers was an eyewitness to Barry Bonds' historic 73-home run season of 2001. He got Bonds to agree to authorize the writing of his autobiography, but a business deal with the publishers was not worked out. Eventually, by 2002 Travers wrote the Best Seller Barry Bonds: Baseball’s Superman from Sports Publishing L.L.C. (www.sportspublishingllc.com). Actor Charlie Sheen wrote the foreword. It has gone through multiple re-prints, is now in paperback, and was nominated for a Casey Award for Best Baseball Book of the Year. A sequel, covering Bonds' alleged steroid use, additional MVP awards, and chase of Hank Aaron's career home run record, is in the works. In 2004, Travers wrote a proposal for the book that eventually became Game of Shadows by Mark Fainaru-Wada and Lance Williams, who landed the deal he did not. An avid reader, Travers poured through books, at least one a month; classics, biographies, history, sports, novels, philosophy. He was also a Christian, but had never read The Holy Bible. "Sometime around March or April of 2004, I decided to read The Bible," he says. "Two pages a day. I started out with the New Testament. After a while I began to read out loud, which made a difference. Then the Old Testament. It took a little less than a year to read the entire book. As soon as I read it through, I started again. Two pages per day, out loud. At this point I have read it twice through. I am beginning to understand it. I am not an expert on it, but the Holy Spirit has come to me and inspires me each day that I read God’s Word. I will read that book until the day I die, God willing and I am able, until some day I will have read it so many times I will be an expert. . .” In 2006, Taylor Trade, a division of Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, Inc. I began writing stories roughly thirteen years ago, after pursuing a career as a singer/songwriter in Denver and later in Nashville. My writing career could’ve been a brief one, as it started one night when it was my turn to read a bedtime story to my two young sons. Rather than read the ‘Mouse birthday book’ for the umpteenth time, I began a ramble about a mystical world parallel to our own, a world where sinister creatures sought to take a little boy into their hidden lair…forever. My first critical reviews from my young audience were mixed. My youngest child, Tyler, was enthralled about the magical place I created, and eagerly awaited more. However, my oldest, Christopher, thought it was the dumbest tale he had ever heard! Luckily, my wife, Fiona, listened nearby. She thought the idea had potential, though she kept that fact a secret until the following spring, 1997. When she suggested I create a fuller blown version of this story, it marked the beginning of my love affair with writing stories. I wish I could tell you that the experience has always been a glorious progression, where crafting characters, believable landscapes with captivating plots, and surprising twists was easy. Far from it. It took nearly three years for me to complete my first novel--based on the bedtime story to my boys who by then were young teenagers—and another two years to decide if I liked it enough to show it to anyone else. Signed to a small independent publisher in 2004, “The Forgotten Eden” enjoyed a brief run and received some acclaim upon its release in 2006. While pursuing a book deal for my paranormal adventure series, The Talisman Chronicles, of which “The Forgotten Eden” and “The Devil’s Paradise” are the first two of five installments, an itch to dabble in something a little different hit me. A ghost story, and one dealing with a murdered teenage girl who waited nearly a century to enact her revenge became my next creation. Completed in 2007, “Cades Cove” was my second release on Kindle, available in August. The sequel to this ghost story soon followed in September, entitled “The Raven Mocker”. “Deadly Night” was my very first Kindle release, in July, and is one of my latest books. Based on a fictional exaggeration of me and Fiona, “Deadly Night” is a mixture of ‘now’ and where we were 20 years ago as ghost hunters (and in my hard-hitting’ days as a Nashville rock n’ roller). “The Vampires’ Last Lover” is my latest release. One that pushed the personal envelope for me, the story was written from a female perspective. Like Stephen King, when he wrote “Carrie” so many years ago, my wife provided precious insights into how women view the world around them, and in particular, their true perspectives on males—something I’m sure would surprise most of us guys. Anyway, as the first installment for my new “The Dying of the Dark” series, the story brings a fresh perspective to the vampire genre, focused on what it means to be unique and alone, both for the living and the undead, and how self sacrifice for the good of others remains the most noble aspiration for all creatures—above and below our beloved earth. So what’s next? Three more Talisman Chronicle books will eventually happen, along with spin-off novellas and one last full novel to complete the “Cades Cove Series”. Also, the sequel to “Deadly Night” beckons to be written (“The Ungrateful Dead). Yet, these projects will have to wait a little while, due to a brand new series that I am co-writing with the highly successful J.R. Rain. The focus of our collaboration is Judas Iscariot and his quest for forgiveness, and release from the bonds of immortality. The first book , “Plague of Coins”, should be available in early spring next year (2011). After that, who knows? Something dark and creepy… Or, perhaps something light and fun? Just wait n’ see! Science and technology always fascinated Mr. Mattson. He studied the sciences and specialized in electronics while growing up. His understanding gave him insight to the direction of our present world and into the possibilities we have yet to experience. Gregg read volumes of Science Fiction. Through the tales of many masters, his imagination took him to places and times otherwise unattainable from our real world. After each book he read, he could imagine where the stories could go from where they stopped and dreamed of writing and publishing stories of his own. He never had an inspired story to tell, however, so other than a handful of short stories, he didn’t try. Still, he enjoyed reading even more than he did other forms of entertainment, like movies or television, because reading let him picture the author’s story his way. Supporting and raising a family put Gregg’s recreational reading and writing on the shelf for many years. His work in computers and technology demanded the balance of his time to keep abreast of technological growth. Science Fiction, except for an occasional screenplay, became a memory. In 2003, Gregg’s work bestowed free time upon him. The job required he spend weekdays away from his family, with no internet or television. Movies were boring so he returned to reading…briefly. In April 2004, he outlined an idea he developed over several years and wrote a few short stories to see what he could do. They seemed interesting so he let some family and friends read them. Their responses were encouraging and he was surprised when his test victims requested more stories. More stories…he hadn’t thought that far ahead. Gregg looked at his outline, made a number of adjustments, and built eight more short stories. They all related to the original theme but when compared to each other, the stories had disjointed plots, leaving his readers interested but somewhat confused. With their encouragement, he decided to create a novel using the short stories, or portions of them, as a base. He went underground for the next five years, ignoring queries about his writing. That effort became “Field of Orbs”, a Science Fiction Adventure novel. Gregg’s test victims, somewhat surprised by the length, read the completed book and provided some great suggestions. He published the final version of the story in January 2011. Is this as fascinating a story as other’s say? So far, they tell Gregg it is engaging and well written. I've been an avid reader since my early childhood, and though I've been legally blind for around twenty years now, that love of books has continued, despite the challenges. The bug to try seriously writing books hit me in 2007, and I started with writing fan fiction stories, which was a great way to learn how to develop story lines and existing characters, as well as do research and new character creation. The feedback from readers, both positive and negative, was also a very important part of the learning process. Two million or so words, and several thousand pages later, and I was ready to start Heirs of the Magi. Fantasy epics and series are my favorite books. Whether I'm visiting the worlds created by authors like Andre Norton and Frank Herbert, or exploring the magic closer to home, like with Nora Roberts and so many other classic and contemporary writers, it's the more intimate involvement with the people and places that these books create that I love most. That's the type of story I had in mind when I began developing Heirs of the Magi, and I hope that you will love the books as much as I've loved bringing them to you!

Before becoming a writer - well, actually I've ALWAYS been a writer in one form or another. Before I became a "published writer," I was a high school English teacher. At that time, most of my writing was marking comments on students' papers. I loved teaching, but wanted to spread my wings a bit, so I became a professional auctioneer. My husband and I owned an auction company in Florida where I involved myself in studying artifacts, collectibles, antique furniture, etc. I used many of my discoveries in my writing.
