In my forty something years I have generated a very broad set of experiences and interests, but through it all, I have always read. It seems that at times it is harder to find books that enthrall me, although admittedly I am behind on my reading, so I decided to start writing the kind of stories I'd want to read. I have always had stories in my head, they intrude at the strangest times. At some point, I discovered that when I took the time to write them down, more stories kept pouring out. There are so many ideas I have, it seems like there won't be enough time to get to them all. I'm starting with one story, in one particular style. But other stories, in different styles are coming. My first literary undertaking dates to the 1950s, when I was about eight years old. I took it into my head that Romeo and Juliet would appeal to a wider audience if it were rewritten in modern prose. Armed with an Underwood typewriter and a box of well-worn erasers, I set out to do just that and actually completed Act I. Sadly, the manuscript does not survive. After serving in the U.S. Army, and after completing a Ph.D. in English literature in 1978, I taught writing and literature at an Iowa liberal arts college for a decade. After a brief and inglorious stint as an investment broker, in 1992 I decided to strike out on my own as a freelance writer. I supplemented my income by freelance editing and paid public speaking, presenting writing seminars for attorneys under the auspices of state bar associations and other professional organizations. Over the years, I developed a specialization in historical topics. I’ve written numerous nonfiction books and made major contributions to many others, published by Grolier, Facts On File, Thomson/Gale, Greenhaven, the Perfection Learning Company, and ABC-CLIO. Topics include general American history, espionage and intelligence, and terrorism. Additionally, I write a regular editorial column for an Idaho newspaper. I currently live in Moscow, Idaho, with my wife, Laurie, the world’s fattest cat, two dogs, and two horses, which we ride regularly in the area’s hills and woods—when I’m not in the basement brewing homemade beer.

When putting pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) I set my mind free to imagine wild and then I start weaving my stories. Three things then come to my mind when writing a story. These are: The Plot, The Character and finally The Place or Setting. To me I think a fantastic plot is one of the most fundamental elements of the fiction-writing craft. A bad plot or storyline means an uninteresting story or book, and this would quickly turn your readers off. I specialize in writing commercial fiction, where the work is driven more by the plot than the characters. This appeals to a larger audience than a thorough literary fiction which is more character driven. I must confess that literary-oriented writers are incredibly talented, but it is a shame pure literary work (inspite of its sheer richness) does not quite appeal to a broad audience. One of my goals for writing is to write stories that appeal to a wide audience, which I'm presently achieving. I have had a good year, with several fiction releases from my publisher, Gem Press. After many years of writing and receiving rejection galore from agents and publishers, I feel I'm finally taking my first steps on my writing career, which is terribly exciting!

I love a good story, and I love a good joke. These two factors are my biggest influences. My writing is story telling interconnected through jokes.
