Between Heidi and Horror: A Brief Memoir of the Somme | by Stewart Hennessey May 23, 2012 | Free! | 23009 words | Read a sample |
| The autobiographical tale of Brinsley Fox's mysterious desertion from the Battle of the Somme. Known in his day as a spy, forger, thief, inveterate gambler and venal libertine, Fox's motives for being at the Battle were always suspect. Paradoxically, he was a reputed hero at the Somme. Here, he reveals how that unjustified reputation was acquired, and how he weaseled out of the carnage. | |||||
| Author bio: Stewart Hennessey lives with his wife and two children in the Scottish Borders, close to the village where he grew up. He has also lived in Glasgow, London, Moscow, Edinburgh, the South of France and The Pentland Hills. He divides his time between ghost-writing, copywriting, a friend's property business, fiction-writing, parenting and desperately trying to find time to paraglide. As a child, Hennessey was a Catholic altar boy, an academic prodigy and a chess champion. As an adolescent he wasn't any of these things. In fact Hennessey was 'asked to leave' school. This would have pleased him enormously had he not then had to attend another school in order to gain entry to university. At university he duly spent a few years studying the NME and chasing women or, as it is also known, acquiring an Arts degree. He then spent the nineties in journalism, and once found himself carrying an AK-47 for two days on the Thai-Burma border, an experience he described at the time as "...revelatory, life-altering and oh God I so wish there was somebody I could shoot!..." He later wrote 'a protest letter' to SLORC, the brick-thick Government of Burma, accusing them of cowardice for not showing up for a scrap while he was armed. Fortunately, his wife is a psychotherapist. Perfectly in tune with the early twenty-first century, Hennessey believes dueling should be legalized; hunting with horses and hounds should be allowed and, indeed, encouraged with politicians as prey (released into the woods on Saturday nights in time for a live TV show); he believes that Facebook and Twitter rot the soul by way of self-aggrandizement and tedious information of dubious veracity; Brussels should be nuked; children get far too much school, and school was cooked up in Dante's Ninth Circle of Hell anyway; and Sergeant Pepper is a wildly over-rated album. His heroes are also very fashionable. He believes Horace had a golden mind; Tacitus was silver-tongued; Daniel Defoe was a social-climbing, grasping, duplicitous bastard, and yet somehow a great guy; GK Chesterton was a moral giant; Neil Hannon is up there with George Gershwin; Julian of Norwich, Mikhail Lermontov, William Wordsworth, Dante Alighieri, Gabriel Fauré and Jean Sibelius all sit on the right side of God; and Kate Bush should make more records. [In the picture I am the big one; the one who looks "cheaply dressed and sun-fried even in the darkness," according to my wife. I have no idea why the other one, my oldest child, looks as if a smiling alien has manifested before him, but I like his expression. We were en route to a midnight swim in France and, apropos father-son stuff, the photo was taken by actor/writer Matthew Zajac; his award-winning play, The Tailor of Inverness, invokes the brutal ghost of history with Zajac - of Polish heritage - dramatizing the real-life discovery that his beloved father had fought for both the Nazis and the Soviets.] This is becoming preposterously long for a quick biog. However, since the author does not have a website or blog, and rarely partakes in social media... The following is in response to the people who enquired, via Amazon, about Hennessey's career in journalism, especially the chap who recalled a fashion parody about the balaclava ("as modeled by the IRA"):- At Scotland on Sunday newspaper, Hennessey was part of the editorial team which twice won British Newspaper of the Year, and he was Foreign Editor of the Year on a separate occasion. Hennessey was nominated for a few writing awards, but won none. And other journalistic highlights are even more ambivalent... When writing for The Independent newspaper he was brought to the attention of the Press Complaints Commission, though they eventually threw out the complaint. However, he was successfully sued by Club 18-30 for slurring their good name (!) in The Scotsman newspaper. While reporting on a cult (White Brotherhood) in Ukraine for The Times Magazine, Hennessey attempted to join the cult which wouldn't have him. However, they did offer to smash his head in on the basis that he was a spy, which was only half true. In fact Hennessey was mildly infatuated with the cult leader, Marina Tsvygun. (The little minx was the daughter of God, allegedly.) He was again accused of being a spy in remote, northern Russia, where a Stalinist tub-thumper imprisoned him for a few hours. Striking a symbolic blow for the capitalist West, Hennessey bravely bribed his way out. The accusations of spying were ironic since, in Moscow, Hennessey had been courted by the FSB (successors of the KGB). They refused to believe that a journalist could be as far removed from power and influence as Hennessey most definitely was. The all-time record for most letters of complaint in Scotland on Sunday newspaper was achieved by Hennessey, for a feature about a Scottish Nationalist Party Conference. One lone voice did defend him, on the Mencken principle that "journalist is to politician as dog is to lamp-post." And on the less wholesome but interesting principle: "Party apparatchiks who write letters to newspapers are all mindless scum who should die." Most heroically, on behalf of The Observer newspaper, Hennessey once stayed awake throughout an entire U2 concert. He still has nightmares. |

| Author bio: The Honeypot Series is my little experiment, a hodge podge of erotica. I like to think I bring my background in literary fiction to the medium, but as you read it you'll see I'm not afraid to get down and dirty... and perhaps more importantly, trashy and fun. ABOUT: I'm an author of taboo and steamy erotica with a submission and domination slant. I try to make each story as different as possible, dabbling in various sub-categories to keep it exciting. I'm 28, bisexual, unmarried and live to write. A hopeless outsider who never thought I'd be self-publishing erotica. For comments or questions, requests or errors, I'm at: SoniaGRobinson@gmail.com |
