The President's Daughter by J.J. Zaluka The President's Daughter by J.J. Zaluka May 19, 2012 $3.99 52480 words Sample 20%
Author bio:
J. J. Zaluka is a writer living in the Midwest. He's traveled widely--Europe, South America, Mexico, Canada, and all fifty states in the USA. His work so far has been mostly non-fiction, but after a long and successful career in academia, he's picked up a number of fiction manuscripts developed over the years and is bringing them to publication. He does most of his research simply by watching TV (including the ads), going to the movies, and reading widely, always with the question in mind: What are Americans really buying? The answer is pretty simple: crime, sex, and violence, all in various combinations. Zaluka's admittedly lofty, and perhaps unattainable, goal is to deal with this subject matter in a highly intellectual way, addressing questions of interest to humanity while telling a reasonably good story.

TV Torment by Saul Moon TV Torment by Saul Moon May 19, 2012 Free! 16705 words Read a sample
Author bio:
My writing genres are mystery and crime, with a little bit of romance, of course. 'The Scorpian Visitant' is an epic fantasy / mystery novel in which sixties teenagers Robbie Higgins and Louise Carlton travel to medieval Oakwood to find the Death Stone of Izar. On their fantastic Odessey they find love and the reality of their mysterious origins... I also write short stories. ‘Switch’ a romantic mystery has been very well received since its publication as a free e-book on Smashwords. ‘Vacant Possession’ is a short story about a poltergeist that moves from haunting a house to possessing the estate agent who is selling the property. Another short story 'You'll Never Walk Alone' concerns a man who is too scared to tell his wife that he is about to lose his job. With little prospect of employment and many debts his family faces disaster. The tale twists at the end where the fate of protagonist meets that of the boss who persecutes him. Currently I am working on my Lucy Harlow crime short stories. The first 'Oxygen Restriction' sees our budding detective embroiled in a story of fetish and murder. This was published on Friday 20 April. The next three 'TV Torment', 'Opera Flowers' and 'Summer Soldier' are written and see our feisty young private detective on the trail of the worst kind of of serial murderers. 'Northern Star' - a blackmail story with a twist - has been completed. These stories will be published throughout 2012, with 'TV Torment' out on 19 May. Another important story for me features a central character in Oxygen Restriction, David Black. 'Double' is the story of a sucessful man haunted by his double. A disturbing mystery out in the summer. Please feel free to contact me on Twitter or Facebook. I have also have a blog, see the hyperlink. Regards and best wishes Saul

Sindie Slick and the Lamp Trick by Tor Richardson Sindie Slick and the Lamp Trick by Tor Richardson May 18, 2012 $2.99 10649 words Sample 10%
Author bio:
My name is Tor Richardson. Welcome to my Smashwords site. If you’ve landed on this page, you’d probably like to know a little about me. Okay, I was born in Seattle. I’ve traveled up and down the west coast, but still like Seattle quite a bit. I don’t actually live in the city, but I’m close enough to see it out the window. Along with the mountains. We have a lot of mountain in this neck of the woods. Water, too. (And, don’t forget the rain.) Unlike most other writers, I don’t have a pet cat. My family had a very independent tomcat when I was a kid. I once saw him drop down from a tree onto the back of a dog who wandered into our backyard by mistake. (Boy, what a mistake!) He rode that black lab like a cowboy, using his claws as spurs and slapping the dog on the head as they went yowling up the road. Since then, I’ve never really thought of a cat as a house pet. Cats like that need lots of room. I’ve always enjoyed story. I managed to sneak a creative writing class past my parents while at college (engineering majors aren’t supposed to take those kinds of classes). Unfortunately, that experience didn’t pan out. In hindsight, I’m not quite sure about that class. It certainly wasn’t writing, and it was far from creative. (I remember a vampire story I wrote for an assignment in 1981, as well as the ridicule it received. The instructor insisted that nobody would ever be interested in vampire stories. She pretty much demanded that I burn it and try again.) The experience was enough to keep me away from writing for a number of years (openly, at least). But… once a storyteller, always a storyteller. In time, the writing came back with a vengeance. I was finally able to make the transition to a full-time fiction writer. Now, I enjoy coming to work every day. Telling new stories and creating new worlds is much more fun than trying to make sense of the one we’ve got. And meeting the people who enjoy those stories is a lot of fun, too. Thanks for stopping by. I hope you enjoy your look around. - Tor

Naked and Adrift by J Hacker Naked and Adrift by J Hacker May 17, 2012 $1.99 64372 words Sample 20%
Author bio:
The seaplane flying scenes come from my life in aviation. I love flying in every form and had to make Frista an enthusiast. I was hired on staff at age sixteen in a resort on a lake in Bear Mountain, New York. Within weeks I heard stories of previous employees owning a sailboat. It eventually sunk but I pursued the stories. Within five weeks we pieced together all the old tales of where she laid at the bottom of our large lake. We found it, raised it and renewed it. That was the very primitive beginning of my ‘yachting’ life. I was in the U.S. Air Force near Seattle and since then have combined my love of sea plane flying with my business of product development. I earned my first writing fee from Western Flyer Magazine, April 1984, from my article - Floatplane Flying in Florida. My many adventures have helped me in writing my first screen play, Hymenoptera ,’92, which was made into a Fox movie of the week ’98 – Legion of Fire/Marabunta. It also is a large influence in this novel as well as in some of the thirty-two essays I wrote for a state-wide publication – First Florida Magazine ’02 – ’08. I’m presently a member of an invitation-only workshop that has produced twenty-nine published authors.

My primary genres are SciFi and horror but I sometimes run off to other places. My first novella, "One Too Many" is out now, soon to be followed by my first novel, "The Tournament". "One Too Many" is a noir detective story with a twist of something else, while "The Tournament" is SciFi.

Author bio:
Author of paranormal mysteries. Anne lives in the wooded hills of Tennessee with her husband, David, and their dog, Sandy, along with a number of squirrels that insist on using the railing on their deck as a highway. Her fondness for things that go bump in the night began with a good ghost story one long-ago Halloween around a campfire. She’s been hooked ever since. She enjoys most any kind of music, loves to read (naturally!), and is continuously fascinated by Astrology, psychic phenomena, and the many theories behind Quantum Physics. ~ Coming Soon ~ LOST SOULS ~ Book Two of the Lost Trilogy After reeling from the backlash of a decades-old murder, the residents of Dawson Mills believe the worst is behind them. But the nightmare isn’t over. As commercial development north of town gets underway, remnants of past lives are reduced to smoldering piles of rotted and paint-chipped wood. And the dead begin to stir. There’s something in the woods. An ancient, unseen thing that steals the light and turns the air to ice. An evil no one may be able to stop . . . Thanks for visiting! Anne

I grew up in Covina, CA, a compact little town 22 miles east of L.A. At least it was little when I was a boy. The last time I was there it seemed to be bursting at the seams. But my memories of Covina are all pleasant, and its motto is still "a mile square and all there." Started in California, to Houston, to Austin, to Kansas City, to the San Antonio area. Which is best? Depends. California: crowded but exhilarating Houston: humid but never boring Austin: too hip but lots to do KC: provincial but close knit SA area: hot (really hot) but ordinary folks
