Paul McMurray grew up on the SW side of Chicago (one block from Midway Airport) and then lived in nearby suburbs. He stayed out of serious trouble thanks to his strict-but-kind mom and a top-ranking relative on the CPD. He worked a lot of jobs, including selling insurance in the “inner city”, where he had a loaded gun pointed at his head twice (by undercover cops, not residents) but didn’t get shot, and learned to look out for roving packs of feral dogs. He also remembers gratefully the many good people there who checked the windows first so he didn’t get robbed and/or his butt kicked. He then joined his family in owning and running the 2nd largest private campground in SE Wisconsin (at the time and may still be), and still writes about camping mishaps at scoopjackson.net, where his alter-ego resides. He travels frequently to Chicago for more "research" on Zak and Freddy capers, which usually involves Italian beef sandwiches and beer. And, of course, White Castles.

My name is Tor Richardson. Welcome to my Smashwords site. If you’ve landed on this page, you’d probably like to know a little about me. Okay, I was born in Seattle. I’ve traveled up and down the west coast, but still like Seattle quite a bit. I don’t actually live in the city, but I’m close enough to see it out the window. Along with the mountains. We have a lot of mountain in this neck of the woods. Water, too. (And, don’t forget the rain.) Unlike most other writers, I don’t have a pet cat. My family had a very independent tomcat when I was a kid. I once saw him drop down from a tree onto the back of a dog who wandered into our backyard by mistake. (Boy, what a mistake!) He rode that black lab like a cowboy, using his claws as spurs and slapping the dog on the head as they went yowling up the road. Since then, I’ve never really thought of a cat as a house pet. Cats like that need lots of room. I’ve always enjoyed story. I managed to sneak a creative writing class past my parents while at college (engineering majors aren’t supposed to take those kinds of classes). Unfortunately, that experience didn’t pan out. In hindsight, I’m not quite sure about that class. It certainly wasn’t writing, and it was far from creative. (I remember a vampire story I wrote for an assignment in 1981, as well as the ridicule it received. The instructor insisted that nobody would ever be interested in vampire stories. She pretty much demanded that I burn it and try again.) The experience was enough to keep me away from writing for a number of years (openly, at least). But… once a storyteller, always a storyteller. In time, the writing came back with a vengeance. I was finally able to make the transition to a full-time fiction writer. Now, I enjoy coming to work every day. Telling new stories and creating new worlds is much more fun than trying to make sense of the one we’ve got. And meeting the people who enjoy those stories is a lot of fun, too. A beginner shouldn’t have any problems taking the original KO count and by using the color coded “cold, hot and warm” concepts shown by Daniel to optimize their play. You’ll be playing at a skillful level just after applying the concepts that Daniel shows in the first four chapters. I simulated Daniel’s betting and playing methodology using both the original KO and his simplifications. The improvement in SCORE was almost 4%. By-the-way, I used Qfit’s CVData for the sims. Bottom line is this is a simplification of an already simple system that works well. I’ve known Daniel for quite some time now and he not only talks the talk but walks the walk. He’s made quite a nice haul over the last few years and it’s outlined in the book. I highly recommend this book not only for new users but hard-core KO users will find it of interest also.
