The Guardians by S. A. LaRocco The Guardians by S. A. LaRocco Dec. 24, 2010 $0.99 105080 words Sample 15%
Author bio:
Before being bitten by the writing bug, I was an attorney. I was good at it but I wasn't passionate about it; at least not like I am about writing. Ever since I can remember, I have loved books. Any and all types—cold war thrillers, Victorian romances, science fictions and fantasies, whodunits—I devoured them all with equal enthusiasm. On my bookshelves are worn, dog-eared paperbacks and hardbacks of Daniel Silva, James Rollins, Clive Cussler, Dan Brown, Vince Flynn, and Dean Koontz, to name a few. I hope you find their influences in my words and novel. The first few chapters of THE GUARDIANS are intended to be—for lack of a better analogy—like a spider's web: various threads twisting and turning along different pathways until the entirety of the web is revealed. I wrote the book this way because it was how the story revealed itself to me. As I researched the book, I was continually amazed and shocked that what I originally perceived as distinct groups, from West African black-market diamond dealers to Middle Eastern arms dealers to Chechen mobsters to Mexican drug kingpins, with nothing in common were in fact directly related. My hope is that when you read the book you experience that same initial sense of bewilderment and astonishment that I felt. And then as you begin to understand how the story and the characters fit together, I hope you get fired up! Thank you and good reading.

Author bio:
I have created/written Beau to Beau fictional stories of Male Love with sincerity to inspire gay men to embrace their sexuality and to enjoy their lives to the fullest, as is deservedly theirs to be realized. These stories are affirmations of the lives of gay men, a joyous celebration of the self as an entire person, not solely a gay person, which seems to be a “category” into which gay men have been thrust by the heterosexual community. This gay person categorization has been allotted with great negativity, seemingly to invoke a sense of shame into its inhabitants. Shame is not the gay man’s to be borne. Shame is the lot of the ignorant!~ My books are also available in print at my website - www.beautobeau.com. ~B.K. Wright~ Beau to Beau has a new author, B.J. Scott, who writes very XXX rated erotic gay short stories. They can be found at 1erotic ebooks, 1romance ebooks, and all romance ebooks, with full steamy excerpts on those sites.

Hagler currently lives in New Zealand where he works as an academic publishing representative. Polly! by Stephen Goldin Polly! by Stephen Goldin Dec. 23, 2010 $4.99 40938 words Sample 20%
Author bio:
STEPHEN GOLDIN was born in 1947 in the city of Philadelphia. When he was 13, his parents moved to California and, upon reflection, he decided to accompany them. It was a lucky thing he did, too; otherwise, when he went to college, the commute to UCLA would have been quite difficult. He eventually graduated from UCLA with a Bachelor's degree in Astronomy. His first job out of college was as a civilian space scientist for the U.S. Navy. The urge to write was strong, though, and after several years he left to try writing full time. He only regretted the move every other Thursday, when he would have gotten paid. After several years of genteel poverty, he took a job as writer/editor for a pornographic humor paper, the San Francisco Ball. In retrospect, this was a great crucible; because of deadline pressure, he had to learn to make his writing dirty, funny, and one draft. At about this time, too, he began selling novels on a regular basis. While he has, from time to time, held down other full-time employment (he helped design the Star Trek: The Next Generation computer game "A Final Unity" for Spectrum HoloByte and has also written manuals and game design documents for Maxis), his real love is fiction writing and he continues to pursue it. His first wife was fellow author Kathleen Sky. Their medieval-style wedding was a Saturday morning program item at the 1972 World Science Fiction Convention in Los Angeles. In the 10+ years of their marriage, in addition to their individual works, they collaborated on a pair of stories ("Painting the Roses Red" and "The Devil Behind the Leaves") about the diMedicis, a family of interstellar swindlers. Mr. Goldin's current wife is fellow author Mary Mason. Their wedding took place the night before EclectiCon 1 in Sacramento, at which Mr. Goldin was the Guest of Honor. They currently live in the San Francisco East Bay area. So far they have co-authored two books in the Rehumanization of Jade Darcy series: Jade Darcy and the Affair of Honor and Jade Darcy and the Zen Pirates. More books in this series are planned. Mr. Goldin served the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America for three years as editor of the SFWA Bulletin and another three years as SFWA's Western Regional Director.

Years of humiliation and disappointment might have been too much for me to bear, and maybe I would have succumbed to full-blown alcoholism and drug addiction, and ended up by committing suicide. To save me from such a fate my muse held back until technology advanced to the point where I could safely sidestep those obscurantist gatekeepers trying to prevent me from getting to my readers. Now I can write what I like, put it up on Smashwords, and share the contents of my mind with anyone discerning enough to enjoy a certain brand of dark humour.

Kit Austen's Journey by Libby Sternberg Kit Austen's Journey by Libby Sternberg Dec. 23, 2010 $2.99 74295 words Sample 20%
Author bio:
Libby Malin Sternberg was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland and is still in love with the city of crabcakes, steamy summers, and ethnic neighborhoods. (What’s not to love about a city that names its football team after an Edgar Allan Poe character?) Libby earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Peabody Conservatory of Music and also attended the summer American School of Music in Fontainebleau, France. After graduating from Peabody, she worked as a Spanish gypsy, a Russian courtier, a Middle-Eastern slave, a Japanese Geisha, a Chinese peasant, and a French courtesan--that is, she sang as a union chorister in both Baltimore and Washington Operas, where she regularly had the thrill of walking through the stage doors of the Kennedy Center Opera House before being costumed and wigged for performance. She also sang with small opera and choral companies in the region. Alas, singing didn’t pay all the bills so she turned to writing, working in a public relations office and then as a freelancer for various trade organizations and small newspapers. During a period of self-unemployment, she took her sister’s advice and decided to pursue an unfulfilled dream--writing fiction. Her first young adult novel, Uncovering Sadie’s Secrets, was a nominee for the prestigious Edgar Allan Poe award from Mystery Writers of America. The second in that mystery series was released in hardcover in November 2004. A third mystery in the series was released in 2008. She's also written a historical YA mystery, The Case Against My Brother. She is the author of two women's fiction books (writing as Libby Malin)--Loves Me, Loves Me Not and Fire Me!--and is under contract for a third. All of her books have received critical acclaim. For many years, she and her family lived in Vermont, where she worked as an education reform advocate, contributed occasional commentaries to Vermont Public Radio and was a member of the Vermont Commission on Women. She is married, with three children, and now resides in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Growing up, I was an avid (rabid?) reader. I am a natural speed reader, regularly clocked at about 1200 wpm (I read Harry Potter 5 in just under three hours), and always have several books on the go and many more in e-book form on my Palm handheld. I have always made up stories in my head, but never really thought I would be a writer. Instead, I intended to be a high school music teacher. I was sidetracked by my enjoyment of my psychology courses in university, and ended up with a psychology degree with a concentration in computer science. This took me to a major Canadian bank as a software developer. I stayed there for just over three years, and then went back to school to become an elementary school teacher. After four years of fun teaching elementary school computer science, I took up the National Novel Writing Month challenge and attempted to write a novel in a month. I succeeded, and the first draft of "Life, Love, and a Polar Bear Tattoo" was the result. I realized I love writing. I left teaching, and I haven't looked back since!
